💛 Why We Go Gold 💛
Many of you have asked why we chose UC Davis Pediatric Oncology as the organization we’re supporting through our KK Goes Gold campaign.
The answer is simple…
A close friend of ours, Samantha, is the mom of one incredible little warrior named Braeson.
When Braeson was just 9 months old, his family thought they were going in for answers about what doctors believed might be hydrocephalus.
Instead, their lives changed forever.
After an MRI, Braeson was diagnosed with ATRT (Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor)—an aggressive and extremely rare childhood brain cancer.
His family was told something no parent should ever have to hear…
There was a 0% chance of survival.
But Braeson had other plans.
From August 2017 through February 2018, he endured six rounds of chemotherapy, stem cell rescue, maintenance chemotherapy, spinal taps, and chemotherapy administered directly into his spine.
In July 2020, the cancer returned.
He began treatment again at UC Davis Pediatric Oncology, where he bravely continued fighting. Later that year, his family traveled to Vanderbilt in Tennessee for specialized treatment, where he underwent additional chemotherapy until September 15, 2021.
In 2022, Braeson was diagnosed with epilepsy as a result of radiation treatments.
Yet through every obstacle…
He never stopped fighting.
Today, Braeson is preparing to celebrate five years in remission this September and will celebrate his 10th birthday in November.
He is living proof that hope is stronger than fear.
For the past two years, our childhood cancer awareness efforts supported Vanderbilt, where Braeson received part of his treatment.
This year, because Braeson now receives his ongoing care through UC Davis Pediatric Oncology, we’ve chosen to support the hospital that’s continuing to walk beside him and so many other incredible children and families.
That’s why KK Goes Gold means so much to us.
It’s not just about shirts.
It’s not just about ribbons.
It’s about children like Braeson.
It’s about families like Samantha’s.
And it’s about making sure they know they are never fighting alone.
