We want to take a quick break from the normal wacky posts you’ve come to love (or probably hate) and put the spotlight on a really awesome person who is doing a really really really awesome thing. Homelessness in this country is a serious issue and one us Roanokers know all too well. Unfortunately, it is also an issue that finds most more concerned with complaining about or turning a blind eye to rather than taking action and creating solutions.
What is really awesome is there is a guy who has decided to put finding solutions to problems such as homelessness at the forefront of his every day life. This selflessness led to the idea for Live Stations: low cost, solar-powered living units to help provide shelter to those without. And like so many projects born from compassion and drive, our friend Brandon has poured himself into growing this solutions-based program from the ground up. In fact, when I first met him his entire living room was more or less a construction site as he tackled this huge project for the pure sake of helping others.
Despite hurdles, such as going over his initial budget by quite a bit and all on his own dime, the first Live Station was erected in Atlanta in June. It now provides a home for a veteran who for the last 25 years has lived on the streets, many times with no more than a cardboard box for shelter.
It doesn’t end there. A few weeks ago Brandon came back to his hometown of Roanoke and in five days was able to build a second Live Station, providing a safe and secure home for a woman experiencing homelessness right in Savage Dyes’ neck of the woods.
He hopes to continue his initiative, dubbed byondME, and you can help too. Follow Brandon’s journey and share his posts and articles with others, and if you are able to, donate by visiting this link: https://tinyurl.com/Donate2ByondMeNow
As his website states, “…we are asking for your support providing donations, gift cards, time, resources, or services to support our ”Live Station” project and other future projects such as the ByondME Buddy program which provides Live Station occupants with personal support from people in the community. No contribution is too small or insignificant! Your donation will support our efforts to ensure that the community initiative to see all humans as real people will continue. We thank you for helping us to help others.”
