When pinning is ineffective or otherwise in the way, consider hand basting instead. I can be far more precise with my hand basting and really control my fabrics, plus it takes just seconds for a small hand-basting task like this. I had initially pinned the layers that had separated on this neckline first and sewed them together. It was inaccurate so I had to seam rip my repair. Enter hand basting! Precision was easily attainable with less than one minute's effort. So if pinning doesn't work out well, consider hand basting challenging areas instead. Now I get to wear my "bargain basement" dress!

While doing laundry, I discovered a nasty L-shaped tear on the back of my pillow sham. There is a lot of stress at that point when putting the pillow in. What to do? I pressed the torn place well, then sprayed and repressed it with Mary Ann's Best Press to add stability. (Starch would fulfill the same function if you use that instead.) Then I removed the free arm from my sewing machine, put in closely matching thread, and went over and over the torn places with the triple zigzag stitch several times, in effect creating "new fabric" at the tear. Ten minutes after discovering the rip, the repair was completed. A stitch in time saves nine!

Two different sizes were test fitted using old sheets and a size selected. Bodice front pattern piece has been traced around in heat-disappearing Frixion pen in a contrasting hot pink. Now to flip and trace off the other side before I pin on the hand embroidery pattern. Then it's play time! I will cut the pattern out properly after the hand work is done. For now I think I will finish the cut edges to avoid the linen raveling while in the hoop.

Active garden season has made for less time in the sewing studio, but today I have begun some preliminary steps on creating a hand-embroidered dress for myself. Stopping the electric blue linen from bleeding in the prewash cycles was the first challenge. Four washes and it was still discharging massive amounts of dye. No way was I going to embroider white flowers on it, only to have it bleed onto tjem and the blue-and-white accent fabric. Retayne seems to have set the dyes. Transferring the design to the linen was the second puzzle. Today, I copied the pattern onto regular copy paper, pinned Sulky Water Soluable Stabilizer onto the copy, and am using a Micron 08 permanent marker to trace over the design. The stabilizer will be stitched over, then removed with water. My next challenge is tissue fitting the bodice piece so I can stitch onto the correct size. I will stitch onto a larger piece of fabric and then cut the bodice pattern piece from that. Wish me luck!

I am feeling extra patriotic this special 250th birthday of the United States of America. Can I finish enough of these by Wednesday to make a door wreath? Process photos will be posted later to show curious creatives how to make an in-the-hoop machine embroidery project.
