It's a 120-year old survivor! Not pristine but still stunning!

These cranberry glass and sterling lattice vases were produced by Alvin during the period where the flower motifs of Art Nouveau were at the height. Alvin itself was considered a comparative competitor to Tiffany in their production of fine decorative items.

Gorham acquired Alvin and assets in 1928, but Alvin was such a prominent and well-regarded name in the fine glass market that it retained its individual branding and production catalog.

Any sword in a storm!

The lighter Model 1840 was an improvement over the Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry (unaffectionately dubbed "Ol' Wristbreaker"). It sought to provide a lighter slashing weapon that still had the reinforced spine to ensure comfortable and repeated strikes, and lacked the heavy basket hilt of its heavier cousin.

These swords were extensively produced by the Ames Manufacturing Co. of Chicopee, MA and would have come with a matching scabbard, leather wrapped grip and a hilt of brass. William Dickinson was a known inspector of arms and sub-ordnance from 1848-1850 for the US for contract weapons to ensure quality. His stamp appears on a large continent of Civil War Arms, as the Model 1840 was employed from existing stock into service for the Civil War.

Tectus nilotictus (say that five times fast). THE "mother of pearl" that shows up most often.

Harvested for centuries, the iridescent inner layer of the Troctus sea snail shell (it's 'nacre') is the most used material for mother of pearl products. It really shines when used for heavily handled objects like buttons or inlay- as Troctus nacre is more dense and durable compared to other sources!

This vintage example is for display and is priced at $40.

Great Gatsby! It's a working Firestone floor model!

A welcome weekend surprise find, this Air Chief is in the best shape I've ever found a floor model radio on. You almost never find these in the wild without their speaker cover in tatters, or gouges or loss in their veneer! All buttons and knots present, and the front lights up as expected- it works pretty damn well for a near centenarian!

Radios like these were almost form over function- the unit itself occupies only about the top 30% of the cabinet, the speaker hanging onto the back of the front. The rest of the cabinet is hollow save for the innovative element of an Air Chief- the "Power Scope" antenna, a plug and play alternative to a bulky aerial. All the less to knock over while you're dancing around the living room.

Simpler times in past times! The future was bright at the beginning of the Atomic Age. 1955 was also the year that the first Disneyland opened in Anaheim!

Here's to fairy tales and playing in the sandbox and the dirt with your favorite toy truck (or other miniature construction equipment) and of course, simpler times.

Two puns in two days- heads up! (Sorry, not sorry).

Found this polymer cast head down south of the border - in Massachusetts- at the end of the holiday weekend. Probably 30-40 years old, heads like these were used by funeral sciences/mortuary services students to practice first attempts at technical skills like facial reconstruction before eventually moving on to cadavers once more seasoned.

They're currently well-attired and staring out the front window as a hat display!
