FROM THE VINTAGE RECIPE BOX 💛
Old-Fashioned Southern Squash Casserole

If you've ever had a summer garden—or known someone who did—you know how August goes. One day you've got a couple of squash... and the next day you're trying to give them away to everybody you know. 😂

So before summer slips away, we're pulling an old Southern favorite from the Vintage Recipe Box: Southern Squash Casserole.

Tender yellow squash and onion, plenty of butter, a little cheese, and that golden buttery cracker topping. This is the kind of dish that showed up at Sunday dinners, family reunions and church potlucks for generations.

OLD-FASHIONED SOUTHERN SQUASH CASSEROLE

Ingredients:
6 cups sliced yellow squash
1 small sweet onion, chopped
2 Tbsp. butter
1 tsp. salt
½ tsp. black pepper
2 large eggs, beaten
½ cup sour cream
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 sleeve buttery round crackers, crushed
3 Tbsp. melted butter

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F and butter a 2-quart casserole dish.

Cook the squash and onion with 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium heat until tender, about 8–10 minutes. Drain very well—that's the secret to keeping your casserole from getting watery!

Combine the cooked squash and onion with salt, pepper, beaten eggs, sour cream and cheddar cheese.

Spoon into your prepared casserole dish.

Mix the crushed crackers with 3 tablespoons melted butter and sprinkle over the top.

Bake 30–35 minutes, until hot and bubbly with a beautiful golden-brown topping.

🥛 Fun Fact Friday!

Remember when the milkman came right to your door? For much of the early-to-mid 1900s, fresh milk was delivered to homes in reusable glass bottles. Families rinsed the empties and left them outside to be picked up on the milkman’s next visit.

Many homes even had an insulated milk box sitting on the porch to keep those deliveries cool until someone brought them inside. As refrigerators became more common and grocery stores expanded, regular doorstep delivery slowly faded away.

Today, those old dairy bottles, metal milk boxes, wooden crates and advertising pieces are fun collectibles — especially bottles from old local dairies! 🥛

🐾 Happy National Dog Day from The Opry House @ Walnut Grove! 🐾

There’s just something special about a good dog. ❤️

They ride shotgun on back roads, supervise every project, follow us from room to room, and somehow know exactly when we need a little extra company. And let’s be honest — they’ve never met a trip they didn’t think they were invited on. 😂

Dogs have been part of American homes, farms, front porches, and family life for generations. From hardworking farm dogs to spoiled couch companions, they have a way of becoming part of our stories.

So today, we want to see YOUR dogs! 🐶
