1960. Chubby Checker recorded “The Twist” and teenagers lost their minds. Parents lost theirs too — but for different reasons.

The Twist wasn’t just a dance. It was the first time young people moved their bodies on a dance floor without touching their partners, without following rules, without asking permission. Dick Clark put it on American Bandstand. Ed Sullivan put it on television. The establishment tried to ban it from ballrooms. None of it worked.

Then in 1961, the adults discovered it. Joey Dee and the Starliters played the Peppermint Lounge in New York and suddenly everyone from Jackie Kennedy to the Rockefellers was doing the Twist. The same dance that had been called vulgar was now being done in tuxedos and evening gowns.

Rock and roll had won again.
