Sega Genesis Era
Masato Nakamura: The bassist for the famous J-pop band Dreams Come True composed the music for Sonic 1 and Sonic 2.
The Michael Jackson Mystery: Michael Jackson worked on the Sonic 3 soundtrack but remained uncredited. While Sega officially denied his involvement for years, composers later confirmed he contributed several tracks before leaving the project.
Musical Samples: You can hear direct similarities between Jackson’s music and the game, such as the Stranger in Moscow melody in the "Sonic 3 Credits" and Jam in the "Carnival Night Zone."
Sega CD & Saturn
The Sonic CD Split: The game has two entirely different soundtracks. The Japanese/European version features upbeat house and techno music, while the North American version was redone with a moody, atmospheric rock style composed by Spencer Nilsen.
Sonic R: This Saturn title is famous for its unique "eurobeat" vocal soundtrack composed by Richard Jacques and sung by TJ Davis, which was polarizing but remains a cult favorite today.
Dreamcast & The Rock Shift
Jun Senoue: Starting with Sonic Adventure, Senoue shifted the series' musical identity toward melodic hard rock. He formed the band Crush 40, which became the voice of the series with iconic anthems like Open Your Heart and Live & Learn.
Dynamic Genres: Sonic Adventure 2 assigned specific musical genres to characters: Sonic got rock, Knuckles got hip-hop (with raps by Hunnid-P), and Shadow got industrial/electronic music.
