The name Negus is a royal title of Ethiopian origin, historically used to refer to a monarch or ruler. It is derived from the Ge'ez word "negūś" (ንጉሥ), meaning "king" or "ruler." The term is of ancient Semitic origin and has been used in Ethiopia for centuries. It carries a sense of authority and sovereignty, often associated with emperors or regional kings within the Ethiopian empire. Derivable or associated names are Negeste (Queen) and Negesta Negest (King of Kings).

Several notable figures have held the title of Negus. One prominent example is Negus Haile Selassie I (1892-1975), the last Emperor of Ethiopia, revered for his role in modernizing the country and his advocacy for pan-Africanism. Another is Negus Yohannes IV (1837-1889), who is remembered for his military leadership in defending Ethiopia against foreign invaders. These figures, among others, have shaped Ethiopian history and left a lasting legacy through their reigns.
