Not only are resonators rut busters but they make all your other guitars rut busters too. Let me explain.

If you’re stuck in a revolving door of gear that might be because you’re making small changes expecting big inspiration. If you’re not finding the inspiration you’re looking for you need to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Guitars like this wake up your ear, you can’t get away with your same ol stuff. Like listening to a mix and then taking a break, or brushing your teeth before drinking orange juice context matters. You’ll make different musical choices if you hear something really different.

Here’s the kicker: play a resonator only for a while. Listen to new players. Then go back to your dreadnaught. Now that’s waking up your ear. Round and round it goes. That’s putting your gear to work instead of randomly spending your money on something hoping something happens.

We are raffling this guitar. Here’s the short of it:

I was almost put out to the great Reso-pasture in the sky by some blood clots I had my lungs.

Upon further reflection I kept thinking about one of the greatest Mule stories: that I met a 10 year old kid from California at NAMM whose humanness impressed me so much I made him a guitar. He ended up being the great grandson of the neighbor who gave me my first musical instrument 35 years ago in Michigan, a violin. He lived right next door. We didn’t give him that guitar, his great grandfather did.

So we are raffling this Monel-backed tricone to support , a local Saginaw group that gets music gear and lessons to kids here in Saginaw. Proceeds will buy gear through . Making a guitar from guitar string material sounded like a great idea… and it really is.

Holy smokes it’s middle of August already! This week I’ll be in my beloved Chicago for Fretboard Summit and beef sandwiches.

This is the handmade tortoise material we use for our pickguards. It took me six years of asking to get it. It’s dyed blocks cut, layered and rolled out into sheets. Thats why it looks so good. The colored blocks are at different depths so the light affects it differently. It’s not printed. It’s a natural material that requires time to dry and stabilize so I have had a six foot high pallet for the last six years or so.

The back of Ariel Posen’s pickguard has a sheet of copper foil to reflect light back through the material.

“Guitar making isn’t for everyone…. In fact it’s for almost no one.”

It’s not glamorous. There’s no striking glowing pieces of steel on anvils in slow motion or shaving paper thin strips of wood with hand tools while classical music plays. Its exact work with an in exact medium. You’re trying to convince a tree or a sheet of steel to be a musical object and they will make you earn it. You need a tolerance for ambiguity - there’s a problem to solve, but you may not know what the problem is or what question to ask. There’s a deadline with 500 steps in front of it that have to managed with minute precision. Appreciation of music and guitars is great but won’t get you through when the novelty fades.

But the trade off is getting to be part of the few people in history who get to watch someone play a song on a resonator in front of 50,000 people, their one true love, or their phone that wouldn’t have been written without that guitar. It’s a beautiful thing.

If you’ve got a set of hand skills and that sounds like your type of fun send me a message. This is located in Saginaw, MI and would be for sanding, finishing, and assembling acoustic guitar rims. If you don’t have experience making instruments some substantial experience making other things is required.
