Montreal friends: I have two tickets to Josh Johnson's show at the awesome L'Olympia theatre tomorrow night at 10 pm. Unfortunately I am still too sick to travel 😭.

I have had some goodies packed up to head to the shop for a few days now, but none of us are going anywhere until I get over whatever bug/flu I've been dealing with. How I hate being thwarted 😭

I finally made it over to What A Yarn, which is literally 4 minutes from my house, and I've returned with a giant bag of yarn and needles and a new list of projects to add to my already ridiculously long queue. 🧶 Such a great shop, with all my favorite things: awesome yarn & fiber selection, amazing samples for inspiration, Chiagoo needles, and all the notions. Here they come! 🐕 🐩 🐕‍🦺 I'll be bringing to the shop a collection of beautiful Royal Doulton dogs in a variety of breeds. These are among my all-time favorite items to source and sell! The details on these are pretty exceptional. Most were made pre-mid 80s and modeled after breed champions. And they are SO cute!!

I've said it before: I appreciate how well blue and white pieces work in every season, and I especially love it in the fall. The complementary relationship of yellow and orange to blue on the color wheel means those fall accents will absolutely pop against blue, and vice versa!

I brought two Shiwan mudmen figures to the shop today. These are vintage, from around the 1950s, and they have an interesting history.

Shiwan refers to an area in China that has a long history (5,000 yrs+) of pottery-making. Mudmen were originally created to populate miniature landscape designs, or penjing, providing life and narrative to a scene. Later, they became popular in bonsai, adding scale and character.

For this reason, they really look amazing sitting in front of a landscape photo, painting, or even a plate with a landscape scene like a Blue Willow or British Castles. Note that clothing is glazed, while faces and hands are unglazed to mimic natural texture, and facial features are expressive and detailed.

A few weeks ago I posted about a painting I bought at a vintage shop in Vermont. Here it is in its new home in Montreal. I love how the colors complement the rest of the room and the contrast of all that great texture against the smooth glass in the alcove.

Even aside from that, though, it's one of my all-time favorite art purchases. 🩷 I totally would design a space around it if I didn't already have one that worked! Do you have a piece of artwork, pottery, glass or whatever that you'd love to use as the start of a room design? 👀
