The 1933 Double Eagle Story 🦅
The Mintage: The Philadelphia Mint struck 445,500 of these $20 gold pieces in early 1933.
The Melt: President Franklin D. Roosevelt stopped the gold standard. The government ordered almost the entire mintage melted down into gold bars.
The Survivors: A small number of coins escaped the melting pot, making them extremely rare.
Record Value: One famous specimen sold at auction for $18.9 million in 2021, setting a record for the world's most valuable coin.
