The Origin of Uzuri Kente, LLC African Boutique
Uzuri Kente means Beautiful Cloth, the spider and web is the legend of the Cloth.
Since Uzuri Kente’s opening in May of 2023, I have learned so much about how Americans of all ages see and think about Africa and African cultures. African Americans care about Holidays like Kwanzaa, Juneteenth, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Black History Month.
Celebrating these holidays are important to most Black people and they will wear their African attire as a show of support. Unfortunately, after these celebrations are over their African clothing, accessories, and books are returned to the shelf and refocus their attention and resources on popular Euro American culture. In America, we are American and African. Our mixed heritages should be studied outside of the Eurocentric lens, passed on to our children, and embraced with pride every day!

We have experienced what it is to be Black in America, now it is time to educate ourselves and learn what it feels like to be African in America. Africa is the second largest continent in the world and is made up of many countries, independent states, and territories with diverse cultures and traditions. There is so much for us to learn about this continent and its history, people, contributions, and cultures.
Accurate knowledge of our cumulative culture and heritage, on both continents, is necessary for our children to develop and shape their individual and cultural identities. Together, let’s begin the journey of educating ourselves, children, and communities about our culture, heritage, power and resilience.
