The old photos made her conscious of her age, of how much time had passed - and of what an interesting life she'd had.
She closed the scrapbook trying not to let any of the loose photos fall out of the book and placed it on the nightstand next to her hospital bed.
She was terminal now and receiving hospice care. Her challenge – Pancreatic cancer. The time was close now. But the old photos brought back a flood of memories – good ones.
Her life had been one of adventure; she had taken to heart Helen’s Keller’s famous quote, “Life is an adventure or it’s nothing.”
In her younger days, she’d worked as a cook for a mining operation in Alaska; guided fishing tours in Canada and spent several summers as a river guide in Grand Canyon.
She’d married late in life, but even so had become an integral part of her husband’s business – leasing sail boats in the Bahamas and the West Indies.
It was second nature for her to skipper a client’s 65’ sailboat from Land’s End in England to its winter berthing at the island of Majorca in the Mediterranean.
But that was then, and this hospital bed was now. At her request, her daughter had put on her feet, her favorite pair of Kimball Jones Socks – her Aloha Floral Socks.
