New blog post: What I carry on every mountain bike ride (and why)

Over the years, I’ve dialed in a small but solid set of tools that come with me on every mountain bike ride. I’m not trying to be the shop mechanic on the trail, but I do want to be able to fix most common issues quickly and keep rolling. Here’s what’s always in my kit and why I carry it: Pe...

🚴‍♂️ I fully support allowing Class 1 e-bikes on Moab’s singletrack trails. As studies have shown, they cause no more damage to trails than traditional bikes. I believe the key issue is teaching trail etiquette and responsibility.

With the rise of side-by-sides, I’ve seen trails like Goldbar get damaged by uneducated drivers going off-trail to avoid puddles or taking easier lines. I don’t want the same to happen to Moab’s bike trails. If shops begin renting e-bikes, it’s crucial that education on trail etiquette is part of the process. The community will also need to play a role in educating new users.

As both a dirt biker and mountain biker, I’m 100% against allowing throttle-controlled Class 2 and 3 e-bikes (like Surons) on mountain bike trails—they’re simply too fast for shared use. However, Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes are different. They require pedaling effort, don’t reach the same high speeds, and make trails more accessible, especially for older riders or those with mobility challenges (like me).

E-bikes are the fastest-growing segment of the bike industry, and now is the time to emphasize teaching trail etiquette and respect to both new and current singletrack riders so that everyone can continue to enjoy the trails safely.

Let’s keep Moab’s trails safe and inclusive for all! 🏞️
