There was a time when finding 25 CENTS felt like winning the lottery.

And there was one place every kid knew to check.

The payphone coin return.

You didn’t even have to be making a call.

You’d walk past a payphone at the mall, outside the grocery store or in front of the convenience store and instinctively stick your fingers into that little metal slot.

Most of the time?

Nothing.

But every once in a while, you heard it.

CLINK.

A quarter.

An actual quarter somebody had forgotten.

And suddenly the entire afternoon had changed.

That quarter wasn’t just money when you were a kid in the ’80s.

That was another game at the arcade.

A handful of candy.

Part of a soda.

Maybe even the difference between having to ask your friend for money and proudly buying something yourself.

And if you found TWO quarters?

You were walking around like you’d just inherited the family fortune.

The funniest part was how automatic the ritual became.

See a payphone.

Check the coin return.

Every. Single. Time.

It didn’t matter if the last 50 payphones had given you absolutely nothing. Number 51 might be the one.

Kids today can tap a phone and instantly send each other money.

We were digging around inside a filthy metal slot hoping some stranger forgot a quarter.

And somehow, finding one could make your entire day.

It sounds ridiculous now.

But if you ever heard that little CLINK when you pushed open the coin return, you already know exactly how rich 25 cents could make you feel.
