…For 3 days, I tracked him through rain, mud, and miles of unforgiving terrain.

Every sign told the same story: this old warrior knew how to survive.

The wind shifted l, and for a moment, the hunt nearly ended before it began.

I froze, heart pounding, watching him scan the woods like a seasoned scout on patrol.

Minutes felt like hours as I waited for the perfect opportunity to. When the moment finally came, training, patience, and respect for the hunt took over.

The shot was clean, and the great buck dropped within sight. Standing beside him, I felt more gratitude than celebration, knowing the challenge he had given me.

The truth is often the opposite.

Hunters spend more time respecting the animal than most ever realize.

They understand the land, the seasons, and the responsibility that comes with taking a life. A good hunter doesn't celebrate death.

They honor the animal, use what it provides, and recognize that every harvest is a sacrifice that feeds a family and continues a tradition rooted in respect for nature.

Roy Benavidez should never have been back in combat.

A landmine in Vietnam had nearly taken his life. The injuries were so severe that doctors believed he'd never walk again. His military career appeared over.
But Roy refused to accept that verdict.

Through months of painful rehabilitation, he pushed himself beyond what anyone thought possible. Step by step, he fought his way back.

Most people know heroes for a single moment.

Roy Benavidez became one because of a lifetime of decisions.

One of those decisions came on May 2, 1968.

An American reconnaissance team had been ambushed deep in the jungle. Outnumbered, surrounded, and taking heavy casualties, they desperately needed help.

Roy wasn't part of the mission.

He could have stayed where he was.

Instead, he boarded a helicopter and flew straight into the fight.

What followed wasn't a few seconds of courage.

It was hours.

Hours of carrying wounded men to safety.

Hours of moving through enemy fire.

Hours of refusing to leave fallen Americans behind.

As the battle raged, Benavidez was wounded again and again. Bullets struck him. Shrapnel tore into him. Still, he kept moving.

Still, he kept helping.

Still, he kept placing the lives of others ahead of his own.

When it was finally over, more Americans were alive because Roy Benavidez had made the choice to go.

Not because he had to.

Because he believed those men were worth the risk.

That's what makes stories like his endure.

They're reminders that courage isn't always about being fearless.

Sometimes it's about seeing the danger clearly and moving forward anyway.

Our nation's service members make choices like that every day.

They miss holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and the small moments that make a life.
Their spouses carry the burden.

Their children carry the burden.

Their parents carry the burden.

Service has a cost, and entire families help pay it.

That is why we wear RED.

To remember that freedom isn't sustained by words alone.

It's sustained by men and women willing to put others before themselves.

Men and women like Roy Benavidez.

People whose sacrifices continue to echo long after the battle is over.

We remember. 🇺🇸
