Megan Wilson has been working closely with López Custom Workroom, who created the final design and fabricated the quilt pieces for Broken (18 California Treaties).

18 California Treaties is part of Megan Wilson’s Broken Treaties series reflecting on the origins of the United States and its legacy of generational trauma, violence, addiction, and the resistance and resilience igniting movements of change.

These are the 18 California Treaties that Native Tribes were forced to sign in 1851/52 and subsequently not honored by the U.S., instead the Senate ordered them to remain secret.

This work is informed in part by Megan Wilson’s family’s roots as settler colonizers beginning in 1643 on stolen land in what is now Massachusetts and continuing on stolen land in what is now Vermont, New York, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, lowa, Utah, Idaho, the Dakotas, Montana, and California.
