Jasmin Zorlu Millinery

Jasmin Zorlu Millinery I hand sculpt fish leather, buntal straw (jinsin), and reloved wool sweaters into hats that are inspired by the Art Deco era.

My hats have sold to Erykah Badu, Kat Von D, Neil Young and Tom Waits. 'Sculptural Headwear for Earthlings' I handmake the hats locally in Santa Fe, New Mexico, one by one, by hand, incorporating eco friendly materials whenever possible. Aquatic leather and recycled cashmere are my favorites!

I had such a fun time with Moja and fellow shoppers at the grand opening of SCRAP this morning. Go see their new forever home that they bought! They’re open until 6pm today.

Thanks so much for this beautiful piece of fishskin! I can’t wait to convert it into leather, and then a handmade hat! Thanks for being so enthusiastic and appreciative, Gabby. You made my day!

Crazy patchwork leggings. When was the last time that you made something just for yourself? You didn’t plan on giving it away or selling it? It’s been so darn cold here in San Francisco for the last week. I’ve been wearing Wool socks and running the heat. So I decided to use my scraps from my Cashmere hats that I’ve made in the past.

I bought this Dressform off of Facebook marketplace. I had to go to Daly city and enlist the help of neighbor to get it. Mike, who sold it to me, said he had bought it years ago for his girlfriend at the time (1997?). But she moved to New York to further her fashion career.

Tanning fishskin makes life more exciting! I spent 4 hours yesterday scraping and washing 1 partial seabass skin and 3 partial salmonskins. I wanted to be extra careful in the prep work, because I hate stiff and fishy smelling leather. This is the result of only 12 hours in the black tea tannin solution. I think I’m going to make a fascinator from this seabass skin from 𝙃 &҉ 𝙃 𝙁𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙝 𝙁𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝘾𝙤. fish I bought at the farmer’s market . Now if only I could find a fishmonger to give me their skins. I’d make them a bespoke cap to wear while selling their fish!

Continuing my silk flowermaking education (started with Maor Zabar at East Village Hats last month in NYC) with my new dear milliner friend, Milliner Amy Smith , who invited me to her home in Sebastapol to make flowers with her. A Belgian friend gave me some traditional flowermaking tools in 2018 when I was visiting her in Antwerp, after attending London Hat week. It was so fun to play with Amy. It’s very important to arrange play dates with your friends as an adult. What creative play dates have you made lately with your friends?

I almost saved the trim to make into a real hat, but then I thought, why not be decadent? Make what I want to make and not be concerned about whether it will sell or not. What are the chances you would rock this walnut husk dyed cashmere headband? I dare ya.
