Several weeks ago, we learned that a baby elephant was being offered for sale.

When we discovered how young she was, we immediately began working to rescue her.

But we made one decision from the very beginning.

We would not rescue the baby without her mother.

We refused to allow another mother and child to be separated.

Today, I am deeply grateful that we can welcome seven-month-old baby Ariya and her mother, Tato, to their new home at Elephant Nature Park.

But behind this rescue is a heartbreaking story.

Tato’s previous calf had already been sold and taken away from her.

We will do everything we can to locate that calf and explore the possibility of reuniting this family.

Imagine carrying a baby for nearly two years, giving birth, nursing and protecting that precious little life, only to have your child taken away.

And then being forced to endure that heartbreak again.

For too many mother elephants, this is the cruel reality of commercial breeding.

Mother elephants are not breeding machines. Their babies are not commodities. And a mother’s love should never have a price tag.

Today, Tato and Ariya’s future is changing.

Ariya will have the chance to grow up beside her mother, surrounded by love, protection, and security.

Tato will have the opportunity to raise her daughter without the threat of another separation.

In time, we hope they will build friendships and become part of a loving elephant family.

And perhaps one day, we may even find Tato’s missing calf.

Welcome home, beautiful Tato and little Ariya.

May your future be filled with freedom, companionship, and the happiness you both deserve.

No mother should have to lose her baby for human profit.

And no baby elephant should have to grow up without her mother simply to entertain tourists.

Bumpy is one of the youngest orphans currently in the care of Sheldrick Wildlife Trust - a spunky hippopotamus with a sad rescue story but SO much sass with the care of his keepers. They rescue more than elephants! 🙏🏻

Repost Sheldrick Wildlife Trust : Bumpy knows how to work a pool. When he sees friends approaching, he pulls out all the stops to awe and impress — just wait for it! Whirls, twirls, dips, flips, and bobs abound.

He’s growing fast, but Bumpy is still one of the youngest orphans in our care. His mother died in early May — likely in a territorial fight defending her baby’s life — and he spent at least a day huddled by her body, waiting for her to wake up. The Kenya Wildlife Service did a heroic job rescuing him and brought him into our care.

Such a precious and beautiful relationship between Faa Mai and Lek Chailert 😍

Repost Lek Chailert : Faa Mai has loved listening to my lullabies since she was very young.

Even today, whenever she sees me, one of the first things she does is reach out with her trunk, take my arm, and lead me beneath the shade of a tree—a familiar place where other elephants can also gather around and listen with her.

And as soon as I begin to sing, I can see Faa Mai slowly begin to change.

Her eyes grow heavy.
Her trunk gradually drops and relaxes.
Her whole body becomes still and peaceful.

Before long, she begins to doze while standing. Sometimes, in the quiet between the songs, I can even hear her softly snoring.

The other elephants nearby become quiet too. No one needs to do anything. No one needs to go anywhere.

There is only the soft sound of a lullaby beneath the trees, with an elephant family gathered around us.

These are our moments of peace.

For me, there is no greater happiness than simply being among their herd—watching them feel safe enough to relax, to rest, and to simply be themselves.

Sometimes happiness does not need to be anything grand.
To sit beneath a tree, sing a lullaby, and watch an elephant I love slowly close her eyes in peace—
that is already one of life’s most precious moments.

It’s World Rhino Day - an important day to reflect on the incredible work of Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to support this critically endangered species. We’re so thankful for all that they do!




Repost Sheldrick Wildlife Trust : Kenya is rewriting its rhino story — and every orphan we rescue plays an important part in that story, helping to rebuild a critically endangered species, one precious life at a time.

While we foster a future for rhinos across Kenya — we’ll delve into our rhino conservation work in our next post — we are nurturing the next generation through our Orphans’ Project. We have successfully hand-raised 20 orphaned black rhinos to date, with many going on to raise their own offspring in the wild.

We currently have four orphaned black rhinos in our care: Maxwell, who is blind and will have a forever home with us, has become a beloved ambassador for his species. Apollo, now an impressive seven-year-old, is working his way back to the wild. Three years old and feistier with each passing day, Chamboi will soon follow in his footsteps. Little Tytan, who was only rescued last September, is just beginning his journey with us.

Repost Lek Chailert : Visitors to Elephant Nature Park often ask us the same question:

“Why are the elephants here so red?”

The answer is simple. Our elephants love their daily mud baths, especially in our rich red earth. As they roll, splash, and cover themselves with red mud day after day, the soil gradually builds up on their skin, giving them the reddish color that so many visitors recognize.

But for the past three days, we’ve had rain almost every day. The herd has been enjoying the water, playing and spending long periods swimming and soaking. As they stay in the water, layer after layer of red mud is gently washed away.

And underneath it, their natural skin color begins to appear again.

It almost feels as though we are seeing our elephants in their “true colors” once more.

Here are Faa Mai, Jenny, Thong Ae, and Grandma Sri Nuan—freshly washed by the rain, with their beautiful natural colors showing through again.
