It’s World Ranger Day and this is just a glimpse into the work that rangers do. They risk their lives to protect the land and the wildlife - so that we can all enjoy it for generations to come. We are so grateful for rangers everywhere! 🙏🏻

This World Ranger Day, we’re celebrating our rangers on the frontlines. Working in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, our 30 SWT/KWS Anti-Poaching Teams and Canine Unit tackle the greatest threats to conservation, secure wild spaces, and support critical operations across Kenya.

Since our first team was deployed in 1999, SWT/KWS rangers have patrolled more than 4.2 million kilometers in the service of wildlife conservation.

At Elephant Nature Park, we believe that every rescued elephant deserves the opportunity to live as part of a herd. Many were taken from their mothers and families at a young age and forced to work for humans. Once they arrive here, one of our greatest priorities is helping them form friendships, rebuild family bonds, and become part of a herd.

A herd gives elephants security, companionship, and the freedom to express the natural behaviors that were denied to them for so many years.

At face value, a hippo and an elephant might not have much in common — but no one’s told Bumpy and Wangalla! The adorable pair have fallen trunk over tail for each other. Both are orphans, and two of our newest rescues at that. They will grow up step in step at our Kaluku Unit, until they are ready to reclaim their places in the wild.

This friendship will fade as Bumpy and Wangalla grow older and their wild instincts take hold — but it’s a lovely, formative chapter in both their lives.

This is what freedom looks like … welcome home Mae Noi ❤️

Mae Noi received a warm welcome from her new family at Elephant Sanctuary Laos.

Kham Ming and Kham Mee woke up early to greet the newest member of the herd and accompanied her on a walk to explore her new home.

Here, there is a beautiful river where she can swim, forests to wander through, and freedom to enjoy every day.

After nearly forty years of hard work, this morning must have felt very different for Mae Noi.

For the first time in decades, there are no chains around her ankles. There is no saddle on her back. No one sits on her neck. No hook threatens her every move.

Her feet are finally free.

Right now, what Mae Noi needs most is the companionship of other elephants. The herd will help heal the emotional wounds of her past, while the kindness and care of her new mahouts will help restore her confidence and wellbeing.

At our project, rehabilitation begins the moment an elephant arrives. We focus not only on physical recovery but also on healing the invisible emotional scars carried by so many rescued elephants.

We are hopeful that Mae Noi will soon find comfort, friendship, and happiness within her new family.

We will continue to share updates on her progress, her life with the herd, and her journey toward healing and freedom.

This beautiful girl is on her way to freedom! 👏🏻❤️

Today, we are transporting Mae Noi, a 39-year-old female elephant, from a logging camp to a new life of freedom at Save Elephant Foundation Laos.

For more than three decades, Mae Noi worked for humans. She spent most of her life hauling logs through the forests, carrying the burden of an industry that depended on her strength.

As we traveled along the route to her new home, sawmills lined both sides of the road—a reminder of the work Mae Noi had endured for so many years.
Over the years, many people approached the family wanting to buy Mae Noi for logging. Each time, they refused.

They did not want Mae Noi to spend the rest of her life working.

Instead, they reached out to Save Elephant Foundation and asked for help in giving her the retirement she deserved.

Today, Mae Noi leaves the logging region of Pak Sang, Luang Prabang, forever.

She is the last elephant we have rescued from this area.

We are deeply grateful to Aaron Jackson and Planting Peace, as well as all the supporters and elephant lovers whose generosity made this rescue possible.

Today, Mae Noi’s journey to freedom begins.

We promise to care for her, protect her, and surround her with the love and respect she deserves. After almost a lifetime of labor, she will finally have the chance to live as an elephant should—free, safe, and surrounded by a herd once again.
