Making friends with an octopus is easy on Sanibel Island!

We met this fun family at Gramma Dots and the little boy was very happy to show off his new octopus, purchased from the Shell Museum.

We love our island!

Did you know that Sanibel is a conservation-focused barrier island, with roughly two-thirds of its land area protected through wildlife refuges, preserves, conservation lands, and managed natural areas?

The protected network includes J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, SCCF preserves, City of Sanibel conservation lands, state-managed lands, and other habitat holdings.

A wonderful milestone for Sanibel’s sea turtles: this season has officially broken both the islandwide loggerhead nest record and the West End loggerhead nest record.

More than 11,523 hatchlings have already headed out to sea, thanks in part to years of conservation, beach protection, and community care. Nesting activity naturally rises and falls from year to year, but this season is a beautiful reminder that protecting our island wildlife makes a difference.

Many thanks to our friends SCCF for all you do for our sea turtles.
