The birds are only part of the story. 🐦

August took me to Southeast Arizona, where a morning of birding can lead down a mountain road, to an unexpected encounter, or into a conversation with someone who loves birds just as much as you do.

There were great birds, beautiful places, old friends, new friends, and the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival—all reminders of how much more there is to birding than the birds themselves.

The birds get us out the door. The places they take us and the people we meet along the way are what make the journey memorable.

Thanks for coming along this month. Here’s to wherever the birds take us next. 🐦

Come birding with me at Sweetwater Wetlands. 🐦

While I was in Tucson for the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival, I spent a morning exploring Sweetwater Wetlands with a group of fellow birders.

A Song Sparrow, Gambel's Quail, and plenty of time spent seeing what would turn up along the way.

Sometimes that's all you need for a pretty great morning of birding.

Where should I take you birding next?

Something special is coming together for Aransas Pathways. 🐦🌿

I've been working with Aransas Pathways to help bring their new shirt design to life for the upcoming HummerBird Celebration in Rockport-Fulton, Texas.

The Aransas Pathways team came up with the concept and design, built around their message “Kindness Makes the Journey Better,” along with the hummingbirds, native plants, and other elements that reflect their organization and this special part of the Texas coast.

Raven Birding Apparel's role is to take their vision and turn it into a performance sun shirt that their staff and volunteers can wear during the festival.

Here’s a sneak peek at what we’ve been working on together. I think their design is going to look fantastic on the finished shirts!

Bird ID Challenge Answer! 🐦🔎

The answer is a Lesser Goldfinch!

So what gives it away?

🔎 Small, compact finch with a short, conical seed-eating bill.
🔎 The lack of bright yellow and black coloration rules out a male.
🔎 Yellowish wash on the undertail separates this from a female American Goldfinch.
🔎 Narrow whitish wing bars also points to Lesser versus American.
🔎 White patch at the base of the primaries also points to Lesser versus American.

Lesser Goldfinches can look quite different depending on s*x, age, and plumage, so birds like this can be considerably trickier than the bright yellow-and-black males many birders picture when they hear “Lesser Goldfinch.”

Great job if you got this one! How did you know?

Inspired by the canyons of Southeast Arizona. 🌿🐦

Canyon Canopy brings together five iconic birds of this remarkable region—the Elegant Trogon, Painted Redstart, Arizona Woodpecker, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, and Red-faced Warbler—in one original Raven design.

After making its debut at the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival, Canyon Canopy is now available online.

Wear the birds. Remember the place. Keep exploring.

Parenthood means feeding the kids…and taking out the trash. 😂🐦

While birding in Southeast Arizona, I got to watch this Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher tending to two nestlings—and caught the adult removing a f***l sac from the nest.

Nestlings produce f***l sacs that allow the parents to easily carry waste away, helping keep the nest clean.

It’s these little glimpses into bird behavior that make spending time in the field so rewarding.

🚨 RARE BIRD ALERT! 🚨

A little piece of Arizona birding history! 🐦

I got the chance to see the Common Ringed Plover—the first ever recorded in Arizona!

Definitely a rare bird alert worth chasing. What an incredible way to wrap up an amazing week of birding in Southeast Arizona!

One of my favorite things about a birding festival isn’t just the birds—it’s the people. 🐦❤️

The Southeast Arizona Birding Festival has been a chance to reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and celebrate the birding community that brings us all together.

It’s also been especially exciting to see the two shirts that Raven Birding Apparel and Tucson Bird Alliance created together here at the festival. Seeing these designs go from an idea to something birders are actually wearing has been pretty special.

Great birds. Old friends. New friends. And some exciting collaborations.

That’s what birding community is all about.
