The story :
The idea of making dresses came when I returned from my trip to europe in 2010. My mother never sewed, she was a clay artist for 25 years. I taught myself to sew as a very little
girl, I've always liked to take things apart and put them back together in new ways. My mother tells the story of when I was a very young and she got me a set of barbie dresses for Hanukah. She left me alone in my room and when she came back to check on me and I had totally re designed the dresses and made them fit my stuffed animals. Being an artist, my mother was thrilled with my creativity and only encouraged my re-coutouring. After coming back from Europe I found my self with all of my mothers old lace from her pottery business, Lace in Stone (she rolled lace into clay to design and texture the surface) and knew there was some creative way to recycle it. All the dresses I make today are one of a kind made from recycled material, with a Solar powered sewing machine, and often hand dyed as well. Rosie is the name of the bus, she is a is a Ford Econoline 350, an old UCSC Shuttle Bus. To find her I started asking every one I encountered if they knew where I could find a bus. Then there was this extra strange day when I waited outside a craft fair that was canceled with my friend Ariel, and we ended up at a different market and then at a friends birthday. When we got to the party I asked our friend Dameon "I forgot to tell you, I'm looking for a bus!?" "Go ask Brandon" he said "Brandon I forgot to tell you I need a bus" "Well, you can have the one outside, its been sitting there for seven years, if you can move it its yours!" I named her Rosie cause she came from the Rose Farm. I got it running a few months later and took her to a property to build. We tore everything out of the bus, and put in insulated hard wood floors, and used all recycled materials to build the inside, like my friend Brian's old kitchen cabinets. The material I acquire is donated to me along the way, different people who have wandered into the bus and wanted to give back, see their old things become something new and beautiful. I think its really important to keep it moving forward, I give away dresses when the moment calls to me, or when I can tell someone is truly appreciative of what we have created. So far selling dresses for donation out of the bus has been enough to sustain us, some times more than others, but its always an adventure. The beauty of Rosie insures that we always land on our feet.
