Heat stress can be very detrimental to cattle, especially as they get bigger. In order to best care for cattle and their well-being, we actually change our processing hours in the summer!

Our processing team shifts their hours to early morning and stops at noon. This means we aren't moving cattle around the yard or through the chute during the heat of the day, and hopefully keeping them healthier.

Cattle feed needs to stay dry. Typically, cattle eat fast enough that feed gets consumed before it gets too wet. However, in the case that feed sits in the bunk and gets rained on, we have these blowers to clean the wet feed out of the bunk.

When it gets hot, access to clean water is one of the most important things we can do to help cattle against heat stress. During the summer months, anyone who drives/rides the yard is instructed to keep an eye on the water tanks. We need to be able to fix one quickly if it's broken!

We PI test (persistently infected) every animal that comes to the yard. If any animal tests positive, they are moved to our PI pen. It has a double fence separating the cattle from the neighboring pen; we don't want them touching noses. It also has its own water tank to reduce contamination to cattle around it!
