On May 30, 1922, an extraordinary event unfolded on the banks of the Potomac River as approximately 50,000 people gathered to witness the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. This monumental tribute to Abraham Lincoln had been decades in the making, its classical design echoing the grandeur of the Parthenon in Athens. Adorned with symbols of unity and strength from ancient times, the memorial was intended not only to honor one of America's greatest presidents but also to symbolize reunification.
The dedication ceremony itself was a historic moment, featuring several prominent figures of the time. Among the distinguished guests were Dr. Robert Moton, President of the Tuskegee Institute; Chief Justice of the United States and former President William Howard Taft; President Warren G. Harding; and Robert Todd Lincoln, the son of Abraham Lincoln and a former Secretary of War and Ambassador to Great Britain. This notable gathering highlighted the significance of the memorial and its dedication to Lincoln's enduring legacy.
What made this event even more remarkable was its broadcast across the nation through the burgeoning medium of radio, allowing countless others to partake in this momentous occasion from afar. The dedication of the Lincoln Memorial stands as a powerful testament to a leader who steered the nation through its darkest hours and a reminder of our continual pursuit of unity and strength as a people.

On this day in 1984, the only American Unknown Soldier from the Vietnam War is laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC, attended by 250,000. President Reagan, named honorary next-of-kin, delivers the eulogy at the hero’s funeral and urges greater efforts to locate the more than 2,400 service members still missing. In 1998 the remains were later identified as those of Air Force First Lieutenant Michael J. Blassie, at which point he was finally able to be laid to rest in St. Lous for a hometown burial.
