Deciding on a tint? Dr. Travis’ four-year-old yellow lab Souad – and our September employee of the month – can give you an idea. In the photos she’s modeling four classic tint levels.

A 25% transmission tint is a light indoor tint. Not much of a sunglass, more a light fashion tint.

50% transmission is another popular indoor-outdoor fashion tint. Not as dark as sunglasses, but great for evenings and events.

The last two options are the sunglass tints: standard 75% transmission and dark 85% transmission. For golfing, driving, and most general uses, 75% is perfect. And if you’ve had polarized sunglasses, they’re almost always 75% transmittance. You’ll want the 85% if you’re highly light-sensitive, or if you don’t want your eyes to be visible behind the lenses. 85% is a classic dark lens, and the only downside to consider is that it can feel too dark when indoors or for visually demanding outdoor sports.

Maui Jim is a premium sunglasses brand from Hawaii. They’re known for unbeatable color definition in their polarized prescription and non-prescription sunglasses, especially famous for their wrap and sports designs. Kenui, in the top right corner, is one of Maui Jim’s best-sellers for us. It’s a chunky wayfarer with wide temples that help block more sun, and we now have it back stock in all four colors, along with a dozen other bestsellers. Frame costs average $340 (non-prescription; additional costs apply for prescription lenses).

High Power Lenses at Travis Optometry

For those with higher prescriptions, you might feel that your frame choice is limited due to the expected thickness and weight of the lenses.
Two lens upgrades can open up your options: digitally aspheric lens design and high index material.
I personally wish they weren’t expensive upgrades, because that cost disproportionately affects people who are the most dependent on their glasses, but they combine to produce a superior product that will feel worth the cost.

We can add adjustable nosepads to most plastic frames, and same-day service may be available. For people with high cheek bones, low nose bridges, oversized sunglasses, or general trouble with plastic frames, this can make a favorite frame wearable again, or expand your options in our store. I found it hard to locate a company capable of providing this service, but I’m now able to do it myself for our community! Service costs just $99.
