AITA for not ‘controlling’ my kids even though they were disturbing my niece?

This situation involves five people; me (34f), my two kids (5 year old and 1 year old), my niece, Sarah (19f) and my husband (34m).

Few months back, Sarah (my sister’s daughter) requested me to let her stay in our house as she’d abruptly left her dorm for some reason and couldn’t find a suitable place to live. This was supposed to be a temporary arrangement.

Sarah has online classes and other college work; assignments and stuff. Lately, she’s been complaining that my kids make a lot of noise and because of that she’s not able to concentrate on her college work.

Now, I’ve asked the five year old to stay quiet and not disturb Sarah, and he mostly follows through, but he’s a five year old and five year olds will make some amount of noise when they play. As for the one year old, I can’t really control when or why she decides to cry.

Apparently Sarah had some deadline yesterday and she couldn’t complete her work on time, and was very upset with me for not ‘controlling’ my kids properly. She blamed us for not being able to meet the deadline. I told her that my husband does his office work in the same noise and he’s never complained. In fact, he says that once you shut the door, you practically don’t hear 90% of what’s going on outside.

Sarah called me an a__hole and has threatened of leaving our house if the noise isn’t toned down because it’s really affecting her academics. My husband is of the opinion that...

AITA for harshly telling a guy who burnt me that apology is not good enough?

I am a blacksmith apprentice and we have this guy (17yo) at the workshop who is basically a walking safety hazard. He isnt very keen on doing what he should be doing, gets distracted easily, then gets bored and everything he touches he treats like fidget spinner, be it his keys, bottle of water, a glove, a hammer, tongs... you name it. This isnt very pleasant not only because he frequently drops said home-made "fidget-spiner", but he ocassionaly hits someone with it. Any attemps to get him to stop have been futile so far. When he causes an accident, he is always extremely sorry and behaves for a little while, then starts doing it again. I know that he has some mental health issues but Im not sure if they have something to do with that (few times he mentioned therapy sessions while leaving an hour or two early, but I didnt want to pry).

Anyways today he was forging a bell and sure enough, he started to play with the tongs with the hot metal in it, he dropped it, and the swing sent it flying towards me, burning my forearm. We are talking orange heat here, so around 800°C (1500°F), which, of course, was quite unpleasant for me.

Again, he was extremely apologetic and he rushed to the first aid kit to get me panthenol, but I was quite angry with him and even though this was actually the first time he spun around a piece of hot metal to my knowledge, I basically hissed at him to shove it until he learns to...

AITA for expecting my brother and SIL should do all the chores because they’re living with me for free?

My brother and SIL have been staying with me for around a month and a half now, completely rent free, including groceries. To be honest, I didn’t really like the idea of living with them, still don’t, but they were desperate. They’re having financial problems because of COVID, which I can understand, but I expect them to move out as soon as they can.

I work around 70 hours a week, so pre-quarantine, I used a cleaning service, because I just didn’t have the energy to do all the chores after work. I usually ate out as well, but I can cook. I can afford to do these things comfortably, but obviously the cleaning service and eating outside aren’t available right now.

When I first made the agreement with my brother and SIL to let them stay with me, I asked them do the chores and cook in exchange for rent. This includes taking out the trash, doing the dishes, laundry, general cleaning around the house, and cleaning my cats’ litter box. Most of these chores used to be done by my cleaning service. I buy all the groceries, and one of them cooks for all three of us. Sometimes I’ll order delivery, and when I do, I buy some for them as well.

This week, I noticed the dirty dishes were piling up in the sink, so I asked them to please wash them soon, and my brother got really annoyed at me, and told me to do it myself. Then my SIL asked me to order out for dinner, but I said I’d...

AITA for telling my husband that he either tells his family they aren't coming on our vacation or me and the kids will NOT go?

If I don't go, he (by extension) can't go because it's my families cabin, for the record. We are both 30. We have 4 children combined. The youngest is 6 months old. I'm not sure what it is about his family but our daughter screams every single time these people are around us (every other week, at least). Whenever they come over I find myself beyond stressed out because my daughter screams the entire time and his family thinks it's funny? Like they pass her around while she's screaming and they laugh about it and it takes them forever to hand her back to me to get her calmed down. And ALL of them claim that she acts like that because I "spoil" her. His family consists of his mom, his two sisters and both of his sisters have 1 daughter each (15 and 13). Our daughter doesn't act like this when it comes to anyone else. Family, friends or complete strangers. She loves people. But the second any of my husbands family come around, she's screaming from the time they show up and until they leave unless I physically leave the room with her.

Anyways, I needed a vacation. I asked my parents if I could use their cabin for a week next week and they said yes. My husband for whatever reason decided that he wanted his mom to come and she invited her daughters. So I'm getting text messages saying "what should I bring?" And whatever else. I never wanted them to come. I asked my husband why the F he would invite his...

AITA for not being happy that my adult son is going to be a father?

I (45f) have a 23yo son who just informed me that he's going to be a father this fall. He's mad at me that I'm not happy to be a grandma. For some background, my son only has a part-time job (his girlfriend doesn't work) and is getting financial help from different friends. He and his GF (she's 19 or 20) don't live together and neither have driver's licenses. My son also has severe ADHD and is on the autism spectrum.

He sprung the news on me at midnight via Facebook Messenger. I told him that I hoped there were ready for all that this entails and that I can't believe he wasn't, at the very least, wearing a condom. The next day, he accused me of not supporting him and not being happy.

So, reddit... AITA?

EDIT: Ok.... I see that his diagnoses are basically irrelevant other than the fact that he's unmedicated for his ADHD as he refuses to take his meds.

And his reveal of the pregnancy wasn't a "guess what, Mom? We're having a baby" He actually said, "Hey mom so your not going to be happy but by august or September I'm going to be a dad and I'm sorry for springing this on you "

The next day, I replied, "I'm not going to pretend that I'm happy that you're having a baby right now. I need to come to terms with it first. I will support whatever decisions the 2 of you make about this but I can't be happy right now. Maybe in time but not right...

AITA for yelling at my wife because she used our conjoined savings to buy a yoga studio?

Me(F 32) and my wife Barbara (F 34) have been married for 9 years, and together we have a son Kasper (M 7). When my wife and I decided to get married We also made the decision to make a conjoined savings account for if we ended up in an emergency.. Over the years we’ve saved up a pretty big amount of money, which I really appreciate since I have a lot of anxiety when it comes to financial stuff. So a couple of years ago my wife started attending a yoga class regularly, and recently she has started making some comments about wanting to teach yoga. I assumed she meant as a hobby and therefor I made sure to be supportive whenever she would talk about it. Fast forward to today when I am on our online bank about to transfer some money to our savings account and see that over two thirds of the money has disappeared. I am of course confused and ask my wife about it as soon as she gets home. That’s when she tells me that she has used all this money to buy a yoga studio, fully furnished with mats and all. I start yelling at my wife asking her why she would use our conjoined savings for this irresponsible purchase. She then tells me she used our saving because she has quit her job to become a full time yoga instructor and therefor she didn’t have enough money herself. I started screaming and yelling calling her irresponsible! She then says that I am the a__hole for yelling at her instead...

AITA for not telling people what my ethnicity is?

So, on Reddit I disclose pretty often when it's relevant to a conversation, that I am Chinese & Filipino. In person, I will discuss it with Asians if it comes up, but when (almost always) white people try to figure out what ethnicity I am, I don't answer. It started because these questions inevitably come in two rude forms: 'Where are you from?' (I was born and raised in New York!

'But where are you REALLY from?' Manhattan!) and 'What are you?' (Human being!). If a friend or coworker gets to know me it obviously eventually comes up naturally, so it's not like I'm keeping my ethnicity a secret, but now I just decline to answer. I've discussed this with other non-white friends and we all basically agree with the Hari Kondabalu bit where he says that this question really means, 'Why aren't you white?' Recently, I had a really awkward moment with a friend's husband where he asked me where I was from and he became really

annoyed and offended that I wouldn't answer or was 'playing games' (because I answered where I was from with the cross streets in Manhattan where I grew up). His wife later told me that I should just answer people.

AITA for not being able to help my son with childcare the same way I did for his brother because I've gotten divorced?

I've very recently divorced my husband. We had fundamental differences and despite our sons' objections, the divorce went through. This has meant that I will need to work full-time instead of part-time for 5 more years if I want to retire comfortably. I'm 57 now.

When my youngest had a child 3 years ago, I took time off work and stayed with him and his wife to help with childcare. I did this for nearly a year.

But this was before the divorce and I had my then husband's financial support.

My oldest has now had his child a month ago and he asked me to do the same.

I cannot afford to take a year off of work. I have rent and bills to pay and I need to top up the retirement funds I got in the divorce.

He told me to sublet my place for a year, but it's just not feasible for me. I can't be sure my job will let me return after taking a year off again.

I was extremely apologetic and I offered babysitting after my work anytime they needed it.

But this has upset my oldest greatly and he's accusing me of favoritism. He assumed I'd treat both my children the same and that he'd planned their maternity/paternity leave and finances around me helping.

He called me a bad mother for treating my kids differently. Even more devastating is that he hasn't let me see my new grandchild in person.

Was I wrong here? This has broken my heart more than...

I made a separate account to ask this because I really need an outside perspective. AITA?

My (27f) boyfriend(24M) were at the mall this weekend, my boyfriend often gets these bouts of dizzyness and he gets lightheaded and often faints, we were at the mall having walked around a couple of hours and he starts getting that look on his face, thats when i know, usually hes very vocal about it, like saying 'im fainting' or atleast saying something, idk why that wasnt the case this time, i took the bags from him and helped him sit down on a bench. While i was looking through the shopping bag for some water or a snack, he throws up, all over himself and the floor and on me, and on some lady's stroller, she went crazy and screamed that some drunk shouldnt be allowed in public and threatened to call security, she kept screaming while i was

trying to make sure my bf was okay. I offered to cleam the puke off her stroller but she wasnt having any of it, i told her to s**u and stop yelling because it was disturbing everyone there, she kept going so we left, she also tried to grab him, earlier in the argument wich could have lead to an altercation. my friends are saying i shouldve atleat cleaned up before going AITA?

When Family Ignores Boundaries, What’s a Teen to Do?

For context, i 16F and my 20F sisters rooms are next door to eachother with relatively thin walls. in the past few months my sister got a boyfriend and everything was fun and exciting until she started bringing him home. It started with then very loudly laughing while play fighting and hitting eacother ect which would’ve been fine during the day but he only come around form 7pm onwards. I brought it up with her, just asking them to be quiet because in the end it’s our house too. I’ve had to bring it up a lot because they don’t listen, which in my opinion is highly disrespectful to everyone around them.

Every time i’ve brought it up she gets defensive and makes an excuse. The longer they’ve been together they have obviously had s__, they’re adults they can do what they want. i’m not a prude i don’t think people shouldn’t have s__, but i don’t get the appeal of having s__ to a noticeable level in a house with 5 other people. It made me and my other sister very uncomfortable to hear my SISTER having s__ next door like i could hear slapping, moaning, you get it.

Regardless of my feelings about it i waited until he left to be respectful of him because he’s a nice guy and my family likes him, and i brought it up when her. She began her usually excuses either laughing it off or one of my favourites being, me: you need to be quiet i don’t want to hear that. her: we can’t be quiet, you’ll...
