Let’s talk about one of my favorite knitting topics: yarn pairing and pattern choosing.
This sample is Terra Nova by Tanis Fiber Arts, knit in Madelinetosh Pashmina, and it’s such a nice example of how a yarn and pattern can work beautifully together.
When I’m thinking about pairing yarn with a sweater pattern, I’m usually asking a few simple questions:
What kind of texture does this yarn highlight well?
Does it have the kind of drape or structure this pattern needs?
How does the color movement interact with the stitch pattern?
What overall feeling do I want the finished sweater to have?
A thoughtful pairing can make such a difference. Sometimes it’s not about choosing the most complicated pattern or the fanciest yarn — it’s about choosing a combination that lets both shine.
I always come back to this question:
What does this yarn want to become?
Do you usually start with the yarn or the pattern first?

I’d love to celebrate Janet today. 💛
After taking my Mastering Your First Sweater online course, Janet finished her Flax sweater by Tin Can Knits — and she hasn’t stopped there. She also joined our Sweater Club community, is about to finish her first cardigan, and has already swatched for her third sweater.
Watching knitters grow in confidence like this is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
Janet shared this lovely reflection about being part of Sweater Club:
“I really get a lot out of the tutorial videos for each sweater. I can watch it over and over since it usually takes me awhile to understand some of the techniques. They are very helpful. I also like asking the community general questions and seeing everyone’s sweater selfies! I like that I can really do ‘my homework’ whenever on my own schedule since life sometimes gets busy.”
I love this because it highlights something so important: learning to knit sweaters doesn’t have to happen on anyone else’s timeline. We all need support we can return to, community we can lean on, and room to learn at our own pace.
Please join me in congratulating Janet on all she’s accomplished!

Soft cotton can feel so lovely in your hands, but it may not always be the longest-wearing choice. 🧶
A softer cotton is often more loosely spun, which can feel gentle and smooth, but may show wear sooner depending on the project. A firmer cotton may feel less soft at first, but it often brings more structure and durability.
🗨️ Have you ever chosen yarn because it felt soft, then noticed it behaved differently later?

This is what Sweater Club is all about: support that leads to sweaters you actually want to wear.
A member shared this anonymously: they love knowing they’ll end up with a sweater that fits, and that when fiber + technique questions pop up, they don’t have to spiral into frustration—because the answers (and support) are there.
If you’ve been wanting to knit sweaters with more confidence (and a lot less second-guessing), Sweater Club is open today.

Does this sound like you?
Not every knitting space is the right fit for every knitter, and that’s a good thing.
Sweater Club is a supportive membership for early-to-intermediate sweater knitters who want to keep building skills after their first sweater (or first few)—with guidance along the way. 🧶
It’s not about doing it perfectly or finishing quickly.
It’s about having support while you figure things out, make decisions, and keep going. This post will help you get a feel for whether that kind of space might be right for you.
🗨️ Which of these felt most like you?

One of my favorite things about Sweater Club is watching confidence grow—stitch by stitch.
A member shared this with me (anonymously):
“I LOVE being a member of Sweater Club! I have grown so much as a knitter… I’ve learned about making a sweater the proper size, using different techniques to get the desired outcome, how to substitute yarns… The amount of information in The Sweater Club files is phenomenal… and Nicole and her team are very responsive when I have a question…”
This is exactly what we’re building inside the club:
🧶 clear sweater support
🧶 technique help when you need it
🧶 a resource library you can actually use
🧶 real humans who respond
If you’ve been craving a calm place to learn sweaters (without pressure), Sweater Club is open today.
