Will soon be upon us, and what better way to kick it off than with a little millinery, a little merriment, and the very real possibility of leaving with something rather fabulous?

Join us at Ballard Millinery Studio for our Holiday Open House:

November 28 & 29
December 5 & 6
10am–4pm

Come and browse handmade hats, flowers, headpieces, brooches and other millinery loveliness — all made right here in the studio. There may even be a few things you didn’t know you desperately needed until you saw them. We shall call this festive necessity.

And because the holidays are about generosity (and, frankly, a bit of luck), we’ll be holding a $250 prize draw! 🎁

There is, however, a small catch: you must be present at the Open House to enter. No hiding behind your computer and hoping the millinery fairy does the rest. You’ve got to turn up.

So pop in, have a rummage, admire the hats, say hello, and get yourself thoroughly into the holiday spirit.

A 25-inch diameter wedding hat. Because apparently, sometimes a wedding calls for a little more drama. ✨

Peace came to me with her ideas for a fairytale wedding, and together we turned that vision into something rather spectacular. A custom piece, made especially for her — and yes, 25 inches across!

From first idea to final flourish, it was such a pleasure watching her vision take shape. Peace arrived with a dream and left with a one-of-a-kind hat fit for her own happily-ever-after. 👰🏽‍♀️

Fairytales are better with a very large hat.

New for January: Velvet & Silk Flower Shoe Clips

After all the glamour and sparkle of the holidays, January can feel a little… dreary. The lights come down, the decorations disappear, and suddenly everything seems terribly sensible. Which is precisely why we think January needs a little more glamour.

🎩 Tuesday 6 October is National Mad Hatter Day.

And frankly, it would be rather rude not to celebrate.

At the studio, we take our hats seriously. The people wearing them? Not necessarily. 😉

So, in honour of the occasion, I shall be embracing the slightly unhinged side of millinery: outrageous proportions, questionable decisions, feathers where feathers have no business being, and the firm belief that more hat is almost always the correct answer.

Because really, life is far too short for sensible headwear.

Keep calm. Wear the ridiculous hat. And whatever you do, don’t ask what time tea is. ☕️

There’s another part of my work with that I’ve particularly loved: bringing the fictional world of Alva Visentin, “a Brimstone Milliner making combustible hats,” into the real world.

Michelle’s descriptions of Alva’s hats are wonderfully inventive—and these two hats, made for Alva’s client Cecilia Monti, play a rather important role in the story.

The first is a Leghorn bergère, with knots tied into the ribbon around the brim. Each knot can conceal a musket ball, while maps or letters can be rolled and tucked between the knots.

The second is another Leghorn, its brim turned up at the back and covered with deep folds of wide ribbon—secret compartments for revolutionary material. I even built a secret code into the hat through its ornamentation: the colours are those of the Carbonari, the secret society working towards the liberation of Italy from Habsburg rule.

I also made Alva a colour card of the fashionable colours of the day—something she might have presented to her clients when discussing their next hat. And I must admit, I’m rather taken with Stifled Sigh and Dust of Ruins. Quite possibly the names alone would have persuaded me to order a hat.

It has been a fascinating challenge to take something imagined for a novel and work out how it could actually be made—and, more importantly, how it might actually work.

Millinery, it turns out, can be rather more dangerous than it looks. 🎩💣

Some people put a ribbon on a hat.

My client wanted silk, a rather fabulous yellow straw, and a snake talisman.

Naturally.

This little film shows the behind-the-scenes business of turning a collection of wonderfully weird and slightly mad ideas into one gloriously eccentric hat.

There’s a certain point in the process when you stop asking “Is this going to work?” and simply think, “Well, obviously it needs a snake.” 🐍

And somehow, it does.

A little sunshine. A little silk. A little serpent.
Quite the hat.
