For 25 years I have been traveling to Central and South America. Over the past ten years I've become especially interested in Guatemala textiles. Under my direction, my Guatemalan-based tailor creates stunning skirts, shirts, jackets and other apparel from the fabrics I purchase from Mayan women at the local markets. sistant to wear much is passed down from generation-to-generation within families as heirloom pieces. I can't begin to recall the hours I have spent listening to my Mayan women friends lament over their children's disinterest in Mayan ways and sacred traditions. They worry that their daughters will one day lose interest in the weaving traditions and creation of handmade apparel. One friend remarked, "They won't even speak Mayan with me anymore, they only respond in Spanish." Most of the men and boys now dress in blue jeans and baseball caps. It's only in the more remote villages where men still dress in traditional Mayan apparel. Regardless, the majority of women still wear the traditional huipil, though now in my travels I am finding more and more made by machine. Everything I purchase is of the highest quality, made by hand in exacting detail. In my apparel line since no two items are alike, rest assured your purchase will be one-of- kind.
