DripLine Designs Dripline Designs is a green local freelance private garden and outdoor education service based in Shreveport, Louisiana. Empowering Communities. Enriching Minds.

Embodying Green Living. DripLine Designs is a green local freelance sustainability-minded gardening and and education service based in Shreveport, Louisiana. DLD aims to provide an integrated systems approach to visible and invisible structures design for green education. The two fronts we develop are namely (1) permaculture and place-based site design (or the "on-site" front) and (2) online marke

ting structure design (the "on-line" front). Through this means, we intend to support bottom-up networking of the "invisible" (non-physical) structures of financial, legal, and (primarily) social systems for learning and building "visible" (physical) structures for micro-agriculture and general systems engineering. From outdoor education spaces, learning gardens, and community food network support, we are ready to serve you. The ultimate goal is to achieve a long-term win-win-win among communities, their local government, and both local and global economy and ecology in the transition from peak oil to sustainable systems. Our "staff":

+ Jön Soul: certified permaculture gardener, Montessori teacher, outdoor education and environmental consultant, and founder of the Bayou to Bay Project

+ Kelsey Payne ("KP"): certified master gardener, permaculture advocate, multidisciplinary tutor, and nonviolent communication coach

Our mission is simple: to not only enhance the natural beauty of a space but to increase its natural viability toward the triple-standard benefits of planet, people, and (in the case of local agriculturists) profit. Now that's a greener lawn!

For want of a tractor, we settled for a pallet and some rope, which is actually doing the job nicely. A fairly level-headed ox, too :)

This is where we'll start rye grass seeding in an otherwise less aesthetically appealing post-construction field of mud. The result will look great!

Today we got halfway done with installing a new educational garden bed plus worm farm bin. The trick was in figuring out how to maximize sun exposure for one and minimize sun exposure for the other (as it's easy for worms to get overheated).

Between the simplicity of the project and the extra "help," we'll have this knocked out in no time!

A few classic tomato hornworms hanging out in the community garden. These guys are tenacious: rain or shine, heat or cold, these guys will hang in there for you. Even if you don't want them...

The most cost-effective way to deal with them is just your traditional hand-picking method, but there are also some bacteria-base organic sprays on the market as well. Tilling the soil can also help reduce the larvae living in the soil, but be aware that you may also end up making the soil more conducive to weeds spreading. Tit for tat, really.

Who is this group of good-looking, hardworking guys, you ask?

We teamed up this past Sunday with the Montessori school for Shreveport dads group to install some trail bridges that had been washed out by flooding, all in preparation for the 1st Annual Coates Bluff Trail Run coming up next Wednesday. Green corridors for the purpose of educational recreation is what we are all about!

Volunteering at the Interfaith Pharmacy community garden near downtown Shreveport this morning. I make a weekly visit on behalf of the Red River Coalition of Community Gardeners to help keep these little guys in good shape for the people who plan to eat them.

"Permaculture is unique, yet at the same time includes all of the above. Permaculture is the design of sustainable human settlement. One of the most important things about permaculture is that it’s a synthesis of agriculture, ecology, and forestry. ..."

Thought I'd share a helpful tidbit on the difference between organic gardening and permaculture. This is a great article by the good folks at PermacultureVisions.com.

OG has its virtues of course, and permaculture can only enhance what you already have going if you've been thinking organic!

The Permaculture garden is a lot more than an organic garden. Intelligent design uses free, sustainable energies and resources. It is energy-wise and collaborative to minimise the impact of a site on the surrounding environment. A good design has great potential. It can connect neighbours. The bigg...
