I’m trying to decide if I should keep this yarn as a plain yarn or as a fiber pack. I feel bad sometimes taking a hank of yarn for a fiber pack just in case people want it just as a yarn, but I also love making fiber packs. You feel me?

ALSO. Random, but does anyone happen to know the NAICS code for yarn spinning to file for state transaction privilege taxes? Any US/Arizona-based spinners happen to know? I think it might be 31311...

comes to a close today with Day 31: Looking Forward.

I’m starting to apply for full-time jobs because my husband will be medically retired from his current job that supports us. The good news is that we will receive payment for the rest of his life, but he will still have significant pain indefinitely. So like how I made this video (which, why didn’t I save it! Dang it!), I will throw the bobbin to myself. It’s been years since I’ve had a full-time job outside the home, and I’m nervous, but also excited. I just hope that i will still find time to spin and with working full time!

Further posts will be the same, more or less, just with no prompts. 😂 I’ve appreciated the opportunity to learn more about and from other makers who are just killing it, and whose work and lives are inspiring to me, so I’m grateful for you. Day 30: Range

Did you know that I have fiber jewelry available in my shop? I don’t talk about my jewelry as much as my scrap spinning, yarns, and fiber packs, but with a lot of help from .kovash I can make necklaces (and earrings!) from my art yarn. They’re a fun and different way to display art yarn that can be nice if you love art yarn but not yarn crafts. Plus I generally use high-quality sterling silver chain and wire. If you ever see a yarn that you’d like to see in a necklace, message me and let’s make it happen!

Day 27: Free (well, almost)

My husband is bringing my daughter to gymnastics and my son is with the electronic babysitter, so I finally got some time to whip up a batt. ’s Day 26 is Favorite.

I usually try to make every yarn my favorite yarn, but when I work with someone’s scraps, sometimes I work with colors and materials that I don’t have or wouldn’t have otherwise, so custom scrap yarns are often my favorite. This is probably the 3rd time I’ve highlighted this yarn, but it’s one that made me think, that’s it. I’ve hit peak yarn. I can’t possibly do better.

I’ll do better, hopefully, but for now, I’m really proud of this yarn 😍.

by Day 25 is Starting Point.

Not so surprisingly I start with color. Sometimes the color scheme comes from a random assortment of colors on my desk, sometimes it’s from a specific concept (I want to make a unicorn yarn, but I haven’t gotten all the supplies yet) or real-life inspiration. Sometimes I just grab colors and see how they fit together (or not 😬). Then I usually add scraps because I love them, and depending on the look I’m going for, which is usually textured, I will add more texture. Then I’ll probably add more texture just for funsies. Then I card it, which is one of my favorite parts of the process.

Pictured is an approximation of the supplies I started with to make the yarn at right. You will see this yarn in a video project that’s in the works 😈

Day 24: Wrapped and Packaged

As I’ve mentioned before, sustainability and people are important to me, and while I am not perfect, I try to reflect my commitment to sustainability and customer service in my packaging:

♻️This is new thing in my packaging: printed Kraft paper bands on my yarns (and batts) with handwritten product descriptions. (If anyone knows of 100% recycled printable Kraft paper, I’d love to know!) taped with washi tape.
♻️Recycled Thank You cards left blank with a separate handwritten note to you inside so you can reuse the thank you card. 🙌🏼😇
♻️A handmade origami butterfly made (right now, anyway) from old Japanese newspaper from when I lived in Japan.
♻️A thoroughly washed and dried frozen food bag turned inside out and stamped with a lovely stamp by that emphasizes my commitment to reused materials.

I wish I were as talented in painting and other visual media like so I could paint my own thank you cards, and I’ve even been known to use plain paperboard for my notes, but until I find a sustainable option that is sufficiently pretty 😆I will stick with what I have.

On a side note: it takes much more work to make objects look artfully strewn about than it does to just plop things down and take a picture, amirite?

Day 20: Silver Lining

These are the only two things I sold in my last drop. I’ve tried my best not to tie too much to whether or not a drop goes as I planned. So the silver lining? I get to see what .string makes with these batts! I also learned that I should make more batts. I have more inventory, I learned more about having a cohesive shop layout thanks to feedback from fiber friends, and I have more inventory that I might use for virtual fiber festival.

There’s only failure if you fail to learn, ya know what I mean?

Day 19: Color

I had a big post about the color of skin, and a big thinly-veiled metaphor for the ongoing white supremacy in American society...but I am instead linking in my stories to many other AAPI fiber friends and acquaintances whose stories are what we really need to focus on. I know that I am part of the problem, but I hope that those who know me know that I want desperately to be part of the solution. Friends, you don’t deserve to live in fear for who you are. This isn’t your fault. You deserve to live in your full beauty and complexity. You deserve the whole breadth of experience that is afforded people of European descent. Most importantly, you inherently deserve to live and work without fear of violence and racism.

For everyone else, please listen to the lived experiences of your friends and take them seriously. There are many shared in my stories.

Day 17: Process by

I remember when the artistic decisions in my work felt more like work. Now, I really try to approach it more like play. Having my daughter help me with her fierce and playful spirit helps me, and we are a good team when it comes to making batts and finding inspiration for colorway.

To that end, my process starts with color and materials I have available. Sometimes I’ll take a picture of colors that just happen to be sitting near each other on my (always messy) desk. Then I love to play it by ear, adding scraps and tufts of colors as the mood strikes me. I gravitate toward some high contrast, colorful combinations, but I also try to have a variety and push myself to color combinations and neutrals that I’m not comfortable with (yet). Then I am all about scraps and texture, which are what first brought me to making art yarns. I love yarns that are complex and interesting so sometimes I err on the side of too much.

But who decides what is too much? Just sayin’.

Day 16: From the Archive

Flash back to when I focused much more on fiber jewelry. I hardly do it much at all anymore, in part because some pieces that I thought were really nice have been sitting in the shop for months. I’ve considered adding a listing to my shop where you can have a custom necklace made from a yarn and done surveys in my stories that have been inconclusive, so I have all but abandoned them. But I still occasionally play with leftover materials and challenge myself to make a fiber necklace. Which reminds me, a customer asked me to replicate a pattern for a knitted necklace that she bought. I should probably get on that 😂. This was before I recognized just how much weaving has boomed. The two murdered pieces went into fiber packs that sold quickly.

Learning and growing, ya know? It’s great!
