For my last creative project in Metals I was inspired by the desert landscape and what the desert offers. I wove yucca fiber that I harvested and Navajo churro wool to create the stone. Yucca was used by our ancestors for food, soap, baskets, sandals and more. Churro is used for blankets, clothes and food. A lot of people think there desert is bare but it offers many edible plants, medicine and beauty.

Get • .rubincenter Memory moves through land, materials, gestures, and acts of making.

Strangers in Our Own Land presents new and recent works by Cynthia Gutierrez-Krapp. Working through object-based practices, she explores how materials carry memory and trace the movement of knowledge and histories across time.

Rooted in her Diné/Navajo, Mescalero Apache, and Yaqui heritage—histories she came to know later in life—Gutierrez-Krapp engages with absence and silence as generative forces. Through making, she confronts erasure while opening space for healing, visibility, and reverence.

Objects throughout the exhibition hold evidence of paths taken, and those still unfolding, inviting reflection on memory, place, and inherited knowledge.


La memoria se mueve a través de la tierra, los materiales, los gestos y los actos de creación.

Strangers in Our Own Land presenta obras nuevas y recientes de Cynthia Gutierrez-Krapp. A través de una práctica centrada en el objeto, explora cómo los materiales contienen memoria y trazan el movimiento de conocimientos e historias a través del tiempo.

Arraigada en su herencia Diné/Navajo, Mescalero Apache y Yaqui—historias que conoció más tarde en su vida—la artista aborda la ausencia y el silencio como fuerzas generativas. A través del hacer, confronta el borramiento y abre espacio para la sanación, la visibilidad y la reverencia.

Get • .rubincenter For many families in the borderlands, blending in was once a necessary form of survival. In Strangers in Our Own Land, Cynthia Gutierrez-Krapp () explores the “inherited silence” of a heritage suppressed for generations.

Having discovered her true identity in her 40s, Cynthia’s work has become a process of repair which physically and metaphorically puts the pieces of her history back together. Her work serves as a gentle nudge to us all as we ask ourselves who we are and where we come from.

Para muchas familias en la frontera, tratar de encajar fue alguna vez una forma necesaria de supervivencia. En Strangers in Our Own Land, Cynthia Gutierrez-Krapp explora el “silencio heredado” de una herencia suprimida por generaciones.

Tras descubrir su verdadera identidad a los 40 años, el trabajo de Cynthia se ha convertido en un proceso de reparación que une física y metafóricamente las piezas de su historia. Su trabajo nos da un ligero impulso a todos mientras nos preguntamos quiénes somos y de dónde venimos.
