We had a great first day at The Lewes Historical Society and opened up our two newest prints! They look GORGEOUS, and I'm really happy with the feel of the cottons. The black print is on a fine cotton similar in weight to our block prints. The red floral is on a comparatively heavier cotton, but perfectly suited to making a jacket or bedgown like the original!

Guess what just arrived!!! They're just in time to come with me to The Lewes Historical Society's big fall event- Harvest Fair 1776 The American Crisis. This is the sample yardage for two of our newest prints and we'll be doing an unboxing (unbagging?) and posting photos. If you come, you could even be the first to snag some yardage. The silk will also be attending along with all of our regularly stocked prints!

The Painted Blossom fabric on the new silk has arrived! The print quality is lovely, the silk feels great... unfortunately I'm not 100% happy with it. The fabric felt a lot more crisp and robust as a 2" sample square compared to actual yardage - which is why we sample in the first place. This is personally pretty disappointing. While you could definitely flatline it with something more structured, it's not what I would choose to make a robe à la française with. It was also, unfortunately , my best affordable silk option so I'm back to the drawing board in terms of finding an appropriate textile for Painted Blossoms and the new Faux Ikat print.

It WOULD be a lovely option for (lined) dresses cut on the bias, projects that can be flatlined, scarves, or anything else you might like to make with a lightweight silk!

So the Painted Blossoms print- what's up with that? When's it coming back? Can I pre-order it? When are you restocking it?

I've gotten these kinds of questions quite a bit lately, so here's the story!

TLDR:
Yes, it's coming back.
No, you can't preorder it. I'm not taking pre-orders but it'll be in regular stock.
No, it won't be printed on the same fabric.

In Spring 2025 we made our very first digital print, which reproduced a gorgeous length of 1740-60s painted, plain weave silk held in the Art Institute of Chicago. (Go see it! https://www.artic.edu/artworks/72874/length-of-painted-silk )

I LOVE the silk/cotton blend I found to print it on. It wasn't pure silk but it was a really nice plain weave (like the original) and took pleats and ruffling like a champ. My wholesale price was also inexpensive enough that I was able to keep the price at $35/yard. Unfortunately, it was also expensive enough that I couldn't afford to stock it.

Peas Projects is a ~small~ business. I started it because I wanted to produce more historically accurate prints for the reenactment and costuming community, and let's just say that while the business is paying its own bills, it's not paying any of mine. And that's ok for me. However, I started the business with a small personal investment, and every cent its made has been rolled back into the business. I didn't have the capital to spend on expensive stock that might move slowly. This past year, presumably with increased interest for the 250th celebrations, you've all been really kind and supportive. The amount of capital that's grown means grown means that I CAN afford to invest in keeping some more expensive textiles in regular stock.

Painted Blossoms is already on order and has an estimated shipping date of the 30th. So... assuming all has gone well on the printer's end, ~50 yards will be arriving on my doorstep sometime next week. It'll take a bit to bust out my amateur photography skills and get it listed, but then it'll be ready to go out to you!

The bad news: The lovely silk/cotton blend we used before had a 40% price increase. That's not a margin I could eat, so I started looking at alternatives.
The good, probably: I found some lovely lightweight (68gsm) silk taffeta that's 43" wide.
I'm incredibly anxious to see how it turns out, but I've got high hopes for it so keep an eye out for it!

For our third (and final) new print of the season, we've got a really cute black ground floral. It's inspired by a great American jacket from ~1785-95, and it looks like the original was a beautiful glazed cotton. I've already got some sample yardage of this ordered, and it should be here in 15-20 days. My goal is to match the same weight and quality of cotton that I've had in my hand block prints.

Sadly, my regular block printer that I've hired for many years is no longer available, and the tariff situation with India is still unstable with recent threats of 100% tariffs being imposed making hiring a new block printer extremely risky when I don't know what the tariffs would look like weeks and months in advance. At this point in time, this is going to be a digital print- though I'm hopeful that I'll be able to have it made as a proper block print when some financial and diplomatic stability returns.

Here's Day 2 of our new print reveals! I've been really excited for this one. This lovely lady is a faux-ikat. Traditionally, ikats are made by dying the warp threads of a fabric BEFORE weaving, which results in the beautifully 'blurry' style. Sadly, I don't have the market influence to reproduce ikats properly, much less in silk, like this one is inspired by. However, we've got our faux-kat with art done with a digital pastel/charcoal texture to keep the soft blur and spirit of the pattern.

This pattern's serpentine repeat is absolutely massive, measuring in at ~22" tall and 12.5" wide. The original gown is French c1755–65, and I absolutely adore the earthy color palette on this one.

We do have an order of the Painted Blossoms print coming on a lightweight silk taffeta, and assuming the fabric is everything I hope and dream it'll be, that's what this fauxkat (I've got to come up with a better name for this one...) will be printed on too.

Options Abound! I think this one is REALLY lovely and my artist did a fantastic job drawing a LOT of detail on this one. The repeat is a whopping 17x24" so definitely on the large scale. As a single color print, I think it'd be nice to get it in multiple colorways too! The original fabric has aged quite a bit. What do you think? The cream background or white?

Check out Ensembles of the Past! She makes such gorgeous work, and I'm so happy our Painted Blossoms gets to be part of it.

We ARE going to be reprinting Painted Blossoms this fall, though the original fabric we used isn't available at the same price anymore. We do gave some alternatives, including a silk taffeta that I'm looking at!
