FABULOUS framed South American Folk Art!

This arpillera is a hand crafted artist’s depiction of daily Peruvian life. Crafted from personal fabrics in 3D fashion, these works artfully tell their story.

Arpilleras gained powerful global significance during the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet in Chile (1973–1990). Groups of working-class women—known as arpilleristas—gathered in secret workshops supported by the Roman Catholic Church to sew these patchworks.

Traditional pieces are hand-stitched onto a base of burlap or flour sacks (the word arpillera translates to burlap in Spanish). They frequently depict a vibrant backdrop of the Andes Mountains, a bright yellow sun (representing hope), colorful houses, and small, three-dimensional figures.

Today, arpilleras are widely collected and celebrated around the world as both beautiful examples of South American folk art and vital monuments of political resistance and historical memory.
