A little honesty from behind the counter. 💗

This is probably one of the hardest posts I’ve ever had to make, but I believe in being transparent with the people who have supported May~December Boutique.

Small businesses are struggling right now. We are struggling right now.

Summer is always a difficult season for retail, but this year has been especially hard. We completely understand that everything costs more, budgets are tighter, and buying a new outfit isn’t always a priority. We know everyone is feeling it in some way.

But I also want to share what things look like from the other side of the counter.

Owning a small boutique means constantly investing money into inventory so there is something new when you walk through our doors. It means rent, utilities, insurance, fees, payroll and countless other expenses continue whether we have a busy day or a day when hardly anyone walks through the door.

That’s difficult and honestly a little scary to say publicly, but it’s the truth.

We love this boutique. We love our customers. We love seeing you come through the door, helping you find something that makes you feel amazing, watching you wear the things you bought from us, and being a small part of the community.

We do not want to close May~December Boutique, but the reality is, if things don’t turn around, that may eventually become a decision we have to face. And before ever getting to that point, I wanted to be honest and ask our community for support.

Supporting a small business doesn’t mean you have to spend hundreds of dollars. A $20 purchase matters. Choosing to buy one top locally instead of ordering it from a huge retailer matters. Shopping a sale matters. Buying a gift card matters.

And even when spending money isn’t possible, sharing our posts, commenting, tagging a friend, telling someone about us or inviting a friend to come shop with you matters more than you probably realize.

When you shop small, your purchase isn’t going toward another billion-dollar corporation. It’s helping a local business keep its doors open. It’s helping pay the electric bill. It’s helping us order the next collection. It’s helping keep a dream alive.

I never want anyone to feel pressured or guilty for not shopping. This isn’t that. I know times are hard for so many people.

This is simply me being vulnerable enough to say:

If you’ve ever loved having MDB here, we need you right now. 💗

Shop with us when you can.
Share us when you can’t.
Tell your friends about us.
Come see us.
Give small businesses a chance before clicking “add to cart” somewhere else.

Because every time you hear that a small business suddenly closed its doors, there was probably a period just like this beforehand—a time when they were quietly trying everything they could to hold on.

We’re still here. We’re still fighting. And we’re doing everything we can to stay that way.

Thank you to every single person who has walked through our doors, placed an online order, shared a post, brought a friend, or supported us along the way.
