What does everyone’s Monday look like?
My Mondays seem to involve a lot of vet appointments this year. 🙃 and of course the basic stuff like grocery shop, clean house and catch up on laundry.
Now I completely understand the saying, “Horses are expensive,” and honestly… this is probably why I have three jobs. 😂
But here’s the latest loop with my horses, and maybe some of you can relate? Please share your experiences too! 🐴🐕🐩🐈🐈⬛
I’ve had to change my mindset when I have another vet appointment. Instead of immediately thinking, “Ugh… what is this bill going to be?” 💸 I try to look at it like I’m paying for a class on what’s going on with my horse this time. 😂 Because apparently, horse ownership comes with a never-ending education—and tuition is NOT cheap. 🙃
Today I learned about bone infections and thin soles.
My new horse, Julep, came to me in pretty rough shape. The pictures from when I bought her made her look better than she actually was, but all in all, I am so thankful to have her and incredibly excited about our future together. ❤️
When I picked her up from the hauler, she had a huge cut down her jawline and was said to be unhandled. By day four, I was fable to halter her and start attending to the wound. What I didn’t know was that the injury was older than we had thought and had got to her bone.
I knew something wasn’t right because the wound broke back open and drained pus, so the vet came out. Today, her wound was opened back up, and bone fragments were removed and will be sent off for testing to see what bacteria it is and than we can treat her accordingly.
Then there’s Amari… oh, our sweet, sweet Amari. This beautiful dappled palomino is definitely my high-maintenance girl. 💅💋
After X-rays to figure out why she was going lame, we learned that she has very, very thin soles. So now my farrier and I will be working together to figure out the best route for her and get her comfortable.
And Talia—well, she wasn’t seen today, but she’s been dealing with her breathing issues since March, and after many forms of treatment we just started her on Hilltop ALV-21 treatments.
Some days, having three horses feels like attending three completely different medical classes at once. 😂 But I am so thankful for every single one of these mares.
