Key Historical Details

Origin (1894): The museum began after Charles R. Conner acquired two carloads of specimens—including anthropology, geology, and biology—from the Chicago World's Fair for the young Washington Agricultural College.

Official Naming (1914): The collection was formally named after Conner to honor his contribution to the university.

Evolution of Focus: Originally a general museum, it shifted focus over time toward vertebrate zoology.

Location: Located on the first floor of Abelson Hall on the WSU campus.

The Collection Today

Public Exhibits: Features over 700 mounted specimens of birds and mammals, primarily from the Pacific Northwest.

Research Collection: Holds more than 65,000 specimens (including amphibians, reptiles, and fish) used by scientists and researchers, which are generally not on public display.

Operation: The museum is open to the public with free admission.

Note: In the 1949-1950 period, the original natural history collection was split, and the non-biological (anthropological) items were moved, leaving the Conner Museum to focus on natural history.

Many conversations end up asking us what is our favorite or oddest item we have sold. Right now our favorite would be the Buttermilk Crock story….. we found it on FB Marketplace and struck a deal with the current owner then we gambled and put it in auction on EBay…. It sold for $6400! We held our breath for a week while it traveled to its new home. Now it sits with its smaller twin!
