Neuromuscular Coordination Part 3
Inter-muscular coordination
Inter-muscular coordination refers to the interaction and coordination between different muscle groups. Note, this relates to the interaction between multiple muscle groups and their actions during specific task or activities. Specifically, this refers to the coordination between:
Agonist - the primary muscle responsible for the movement
Antagonist - the opposing muscle group to the agonist
Synergists - perform or assist with same joint movement as agonist
Just as with intra-muscular coordination, when you increase the level of inter-muscular coordination you increase the ability of muscles and groups of muscles to exert a force. This gives an athlete the ability to improve movement efficiency which means more force can be applied with less effort.
This highlights the importance of skills training and the practice of proper technique.
Simply put, by training your neuromuscular coordination you gain greater control of your body’s actions creating the ability to produce on demand desired performance results.
