Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese decorative cord made from twisted washi paper. It has long been used to decorate gifts and ceremonial wrapping. One origin story traces the custom to red-and-white cords tied around gifts brought back by a returning Japanese envoy during the Asuka period. The exact origins are uncertain, but the tradition continues today in colorful accessories and art.
During workshop, Arrange the cords into an abstract design or a motif of your own. As you create, you may become so absorbed in the process that you lose track of time. Then add your work directly to a Christmas card, birthday card, or another greeting card. Depending on your design, you can also adapt it into a holiday ornament or brooch.
Presented by the Japanese Institute of St. Louis, in collaboration with Liberated Roots Co’ and Lamiaa Botanicals.
