Working on the demolition series. "The Remains" will hopefully be ready to go to gallery for rotation and quarterly meeting tomorrow. Dump truck taking the rubble of the demolition of the East Wing to a local golf course to dump and be buried. I still feel the pain of that destruction.

When every automated system died at 17,500 miles per hour, he reached for a grease pencil and his wristwatch.
May 15, 1963. Gordon Cooper launched into orbit aboard a capsule the size of a phone booth. The mission was called Faith 7 — and for most of its 22 orbits, it earned that name completely.
Everything worked. The instruments hummed. The trajectory held steady. Cooper watched the planet turn beneath him, blues and greens sliding past his window every ninety minutes, becoming the first American to spend an entire day in space.
Then, on the 19th orbit, a warning light flashed.
A sensor claimed the capsule was beginning reentry. Cooper checked the instruments. The trajectory was stable. Everything felt right. He concluded the sensor was erroneous and turned it off. Wikipedia

A short circuit tore through the electrical system, knocking out the automatic stabilization and control system completely. NASA
Then the carbon dioxide level began rising in his cabin and suit.
Cooper reported to Mission Control with characteristic calm: "Things are beginning to stack up a little."
That was the entirety of his distress call.
Because here is what reentry actually demands: precision measured in fractions of a degree. Come in too shallow, and the capsule skips off the atmosphere and disappears into the void forever. Come in too steep, and friction turns it into a fireball in seconds. The automated systems existed precisely because those margins are so unforgiving.
And now they were all gone.
Turning to his understanding of star patterns, Cooper took manual control of the tiny capsule and successfully estimated the correct pitch for reentry into the atmosphere. Wikipedia He had studied the constellations before launch and memorized their positions from orbit.
Now they would guide him home.

Then he checked his wristwatch.
No automated countdown. No guidance computer. Just a watch ticking away the seconds, his memorized orbital calculations, and the stars.
"So I used my wristwatch for time," he later recalled, "my eyeballs out the window for attitude. Then I fired my retrorockets at the right time and landed right by the carrier." Wikipedia
The capsule shuddered. The sky turned to fire. Plasma wrapped around the spacecraft as it slammed into the atmosphere. For several minutes, all communication went silent. NASA couldn't see him. They couldn't hear him. He was wrapped in superheated air, completely alone.
The trajectory held.
Faith 7 splashed down approximately 70 miles southeast of Midway Atoll, just 4.4 miles from the primary recovery ship USS Kearsarge — the most accurate landing of the entire Mercury program. This Day in Aviation
More precise than any automated reentry. More precise than the computers on their best day.
Cooper stepped out of the capsule calm, smiling, and ready to debrief.

Like all Mercury flights, MA-9 was originally designed to be fully controlled from the ground — a controversial engineering decision which reduced the role of an astronaut to that of a passenger, and prompted Chuck Yeager to describe Mercury astronauts as "Spam in a can." Cooper later wrote: "This flight would put an end to all that nonsense. My electronics were shot and a pilot had the stick." Wikipedia
He was right.
What Cooper proved on May 15, 1963, still matters: when everything fails — when the systems go dark and the margin for error collapses to nearly nothing — what saves you isn't the machine. It's the person flying it.
A steady mind. A clear decision. The courage to trust yourself when everything else has failed.
Gordon Cooper didn't freeze. He didn't spiral.
He reached for a grease pencil. He looked at the stars. He checked his watch.
And he brought himself home — more precisely than the computers ever had.
The final backup system was never the software. It was him.

After more than two decades of fundraising and planning, the former Dixie Theater in Staunton could open its doors later this year.

The nonprofit Arcadia Project signed a construction contract to begin work on the event space with an initial round of improvements to be completed some time in December.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. at the former downtown theater, located at 125 E. Beverley St. in downtown Staunton, to formally kick off construction.

The space will host live music, dances, children’s shows, lectures, weddings, corporate events and more.

The public comment period will close on March 7, 2026.

Imagine walking or biking along Lewis Creek and Commerce Rd safely, separated from traffic.

The Commerce Road Shared Use Path project is looking to connect this nearly mile-long section from Greenville Ave. (near the watering can) to Statler Blvd. for pedestrians and bicyclists. VDOT is hosting an informational meeting to show how they plan to repurpose existing travel lanes to create the path.

VDOT would love to hear from you! Come ask questions and share your thoughts.
