Have you ever been told "No white after Labor Day?" Do you know how that came to be?

The "no white after Labor Day" rule is an old American fashion custom that began as a mix of weather-based practicality and high-society exclusion during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

History of the Rule
Summer Practicality: Before air conditioning, lightweight white cotton and linen clothes helped people stay cool by reflecting the sun during hot summer months.

Class Signaling: Wearing white became a status symbol for the wealthy elite who vacationed in places like Newport, Rhode Island, or the Hamptons. It showed they did not do physical work that would stain their clothes.

Returning to the City: Labor Day signaled the end of summer leisure and a return to urban life. City streets back then were dirty and muddy, meaning white clothes got ruined quickly.

Media Reinforcement: By the mid-20th century, fashion magazines and etiquette guides turned this seasonal transition into a strict nationwide rule.

An Outdated Idea: Modern fashion experts and etiquette authorities, agree that the old rule no longer applies.
