After months in storage, it can be tempting to hitch up the boat and head straight for the water. The boat, unfortunately, may have other plans.

Before launching, give it a thorough inspection. Check the hull for visible cracks, damage, or other problems that may have appeared during storage. Inspect the propeller, lines, fittings, and other exterior components as well.

If the battery was disconnected or removed, reconnect it correctly and check its charge and condition. Look over electrical systems, navigation lights, pumps, and onboard equipment before leaving home.

The engine also deserves attention. Check fluid levels, fuel lines, hoses, belts, and other components recommended by the manufacturer. If the boat was winterized, follow the proper procedure for returning the engine and water systems to service.

Do not forget safety equipment. Confirm that life jackets are in good condition and that required fire extinguishers, signaling devices, and other gear are present and serviceable.

Finally, check the trailer. Tires, lights, bearings, winch straps, and tie-downs all matter before the boat reaches the ramp.

Boat storage is only part of the job. A careful return-to-service check helps make launch day smoother. Learn about storage solutions at www.arcosstorage.com

Wine can be surprisingly particular about where and how it is stored. A few everyday habits may affect its quality long before the bottle is opened.

Temperature is one of the biggest considerations. Repeated exposure to excessive heat can accelerate chemical reactions inside the bottle and adversely affect the wine. Large temperature fluctuations can also create poor storage conditions, which is why a consistently cool environment is generally preferred.

Light matters too. Prolonged exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet light can cause chemical changes in wine, particularly in bottles made with lighter-colored glass. Keeping bottles away from direct sunlight is a simple precaution.

Storage position can matter for bottles sealed with natural cork. Traditionally, these bottles are stored on their sides so the wine remains in contact with the cork. Screw-cap bottles do not have the same requirement.

Then there is the kitchen. It may seem convenient to keep wine near the stove or refrigerator, but heat-producing appliances can make that area less suitable for long-term storage.

Good wine storage is mostly about consistency. Wine prefers fewer surprises than the average family group chat.

There is one box that should never end up behind the sofa, underneath six tubs, and somewhere beyond the Christmas tree.

Call it the First Box.

This is the box containing items you are most likely to need before everything else comes out of storage. Depending on the situation, that could include basic tools, cleaning supplies, spare chargers, important non-sensitive documents, frequently used kitchen items, or essentials needed immediately after a move.

Clearly label the box and place it near the front of the storage unit. Better yet, create a simple inventory so there is no need to rely on memory three months later.

The same principle works for other frequently needed belongings. Seasonal items, business supplies, children’s gear, or anything likely to come out early should remain accessible rather than being buried at the back.

One important exception: valuables, irreplaceable documents, medications, and other items that should remain personally accessible generally do not belong in a storage unit.

A little planning can turn retrieval day from an archaeological excavation into a five-minute job.

When it’s time to organize that extra space, start with www.arcosstorage.com for Arco’s Storage locations, unit options, and facility information.
