Laurence Manning (1756–1804) was a prominent Continental Army officer during the American Revolutionary War, celebrated for his exceptional valor in the Southern Campaign. Born in County Antrim, Ireland, he immigrated to Pennsylvania as a youth and enlisted in the Continental Army at the outbreak of the war. Military Service and Wartime Heroics Early Service: Manning originally served in the north, where he was wounded during an engagement at Staten Island. Lee’s Legion: Following his recovery, he was transferred to Virginia and commissioned as a lieutenant (and later captain) in the infantry branch of Lieutenant Colonel Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee's highly elite 2nd Partisan Corps (Lee's Legion). Southern Campaigns: Under the overarching command of General Nathanael Greene, Manning fought at major engagements including the Siege of Fort Watson, the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, and the Battle of Cowpens. Battle of Eutaw Springs: Manning earned lasting fame on September 8, 1781, at the Battle of Eutaw Springs. During a chaotic charge into British lines, he famously used a British officer as a human shield to escape heavy fire, ensuring his survival and cementing his reputation for tactical bravery. Post-War Legacy and Dynasty Political & Militia Career: After the war, Manning settled permanently in South Carolina as a planter in Clarendon County. He served in the state legislature and was appointed the very first Adjutant General of the South Carolina State Militia. Family Lineage: He married Susannah Richardson, daughter of Patriot General Richard Richardson. This union founded one of South Carolina's most prominent political dynasties: his son Richard Irvine Manning I and his grandson John Laurence Manning both went on to serve as Governors of South Carolina. Historical Artifacts: Renowned historical painter John Trumbull captured Manning’s likeness in an oil miniature titled Portrait Study of Laurence Manning (1791), which is preserved in the Trumbull Collection at the Yale University Art Gallery.
