Miss Cleio was a 19th-century snake charmer and sideshow performer, famously immortalized in antique sepia-toned cabinet cards.

During the late 1880s and 1890s, these collectible photography cards—capturing her wrapped in massive pythons.

Information about her life and career is scarce, mostly surviving through antique ephemera.

Sideshow Era: In the 1880’s-1890’s, Miss Cleio worked within circuses and traveling dime museums prominently featured snake charmers. Miss Cleio typically wore exotic, heavily decorated, and bedazzled costumes to captivate audiences.

Miss Cleio's cards were frequently sold as souvenirs during her stage appearances.

This Cabinet card features Miss Cleio at age 20 wrapped in a huge python. The back of the card has a handwritten note and Autograph from Miss Cleio from 1895. It does have a heavy crease in it, but is a fantastic piece still.

I also have a second Miss Cleio autographed card, not featuring a snake available.

Picked up a few Circus Sideshow Freak Show Cabinet cards from the 1890’s.

This one shows George Moore, known as “the Living Skeleton,” and Fred Howe, known as “the Fat Man,” performing as sideshow entertainers in the late 19th century.

As described in a 1897 Strand Magazine caption, Moore stood about 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighed only around 97 pounds, while Fred Howe measured about 4 feet 2 inches in height and weighed approximately 422 pounds, creating one of the most extreme physical contrasts featured in traveling circus acts of the time.

Howe had originally trained as a carpenter in Pennsylvania before his growing size led him to join the Forepaugh Circus as a “fat boy,” where he met Moore. Moore, born in Helena, Montana, worked in his family’s dry goods store until he left to pursue life on the road, eventually performing as a “living skeleton” in the circus.

The two became close friends and developed a boxing routine that blended their dramatic size difference with comedy, turning their performances into a popular attraction in an era when sideshow acts were a major part of traveling entertainment.
