Bill Rodgers got his 1975 Boston-winning shoes from Steve Prefontaine. Think about that. Pre handed him a pair of Nike Boston '73 racing flats out of a duffel bag, and Rodgers ran 2:09:55 for an American record and the first Nike Boston win in history. The shoe was thin, light, and held together with nylon and glue.

Forty-two years later, Geoffrey Kirui ran 2:09:37 to win Boston in the Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4%, the first super shoe to take the title. A carbon plate, a slab of ZoomX, and over $200 worth of R&D underfoot. The kicker: Kirui's winning time was just 18 seconds faster than Rodgers ran on a racing flat over four decades earlier.

That's the part that messes with you. The shoes look like they came from different planets. The times are almost identical. Boston has a way of humbling technology with weather, hills, and tactics. Forty-two years of foam evolution, and 18 seconds. Are super shoes overrated at Boston, or did Rodgers just run an unreal race for the era?

Bill Schwarz is 90 years old. He ran his first marathon on May 31.

He covered all 26.2 miles of the Rock 'n' Roll San Diego course in just over nine hours. He didn't finish inside the official cutoff window, but he kept going until his watch confirmed the full distance. That was the only number he cared about.

Schwarz is a retired engineer who once worked on rocket parts for the Apollo space program. He takes no medication. He's never had a joint replaced. He first ran in the 1950s, when he picked up the sport in high school to free up time for music, and it has come and gone from his life ever since. He calls it meditation.

Running took on more weight two and a half years ago, when his wife Janice died. He signed up for a 5K to give himself somewhere to go. Then a half marathon. Then five of them. Last year, he covered 60 miles of the Camino de Santiago in six days, came home, and decided his body could handle 26.2.

He trained about ten hours a week with a strength coach, a running coach, a stretch trainer, and a Pilates instructor. He lost 40 pounds. He fed data from his Polar watch into ChatGPT and asked it to write his fueling plan. He ran by heart rate in Zone 2. A friend of his daughter ran the whole thing beside him.

Now he wants Boston. The oldest person to officially finish that race was 84.

"My objective is to finish," he said before the race. "And whatever time it takes, it's going to be wonderful."
