Why Iraq Built the Victory Arch
-
The Iraqi Victory Arch was commissioned by Saddam Hussein in 1986, while the Iran-Iraq War was still being fought.

It was declared a monument to Iraq’s victory even though the war would continue for another two years. When the conflict finally ended, it ended in a ceasefire with no territory gained and more than a million people dead across both sides.

The monument itself was filled with symbolism. Its enormous swords were cast from melted-down guns and tanks belonging to Iraqi soldiers killed during the war.

Around the base of the two arches sat 2,500 helmets at each arch, claimed to have been taken from Iranian soldiers killed in combat.

After the 2003 invasion, the area became part of Baghdad’s Green Zone. Tens of thousands of U.S. and coalition troops then lived, worked, and moved through the same parade grounds Saddam had built to celebrate the war.

Why Tiger Stripe Lost to MARPAT
-
When the Marine Corps decided it wanted camouflage that was distinctly its own, the search went far beyond a handful of options.

Two active-duty scout snipers, Kenneth Henley and John Heisterman, were tasked with leading an evaluation of more than 150 camouflage patterns from militaries around the world.

The field was eventually narrowed to three:

Tiger Stripe, Rhodesian Brushstroke, and CADPAT.

Those patterns were digitized, reconstructed, and tested at the USMC Scout Sniper Instructor School.

Tiger Stripe performed well, but it did not win.

The selected design was derived from the Canadian military’s CADPAT and rebuilt with new colors chosen by the Marines. One of the key colors was Coyote Brown, selected from a Home Depot paint chip and compared against soil samples.

That pattern eventually became MARPAT.

The US War We’re Still “Fighting”
-
On June 25, 1950, more than 135,000 North Korean troops invaded South Korea, bringing American forces into the conflict.

Those U.S. troops entered Korea only five years after World War II, following major post-war military budget cuts. They arrived under-trained and under-equipped against an enemy that had been preparing for the fight.

General Douglas MacArthur then launched a surprise amphibious landing at Inchon, far behind North Korean lines. Within two weeks, Seoul had been retaken, and within a month UN forces were pushing deep into North Korea toward the Chinese border.

Then China entered the war.

On Thanksgiving Day 1950, the subtitles describe 120,000 Chinese troops surrounding 30,000 U.S. troops near a frozen reservoir in the mountains of North Korea.

The fighting eventually settled into a stalemate near the original 38th parallel, and an armistice was signed on July 27, 1953.

German WWI Helmets in Afghanistan?
-
The German Stahlhelm, or steel helmet, was first issued to German troops at the Battle of Verdun in 1916. More than 8.5 million were produced before the end of World War I, creating one of the most recognizable military helmet silhouettes in history.

Its story eventually reached Afghanistan.

During the 1930s, Afghanistan’s king was modernizing the military and purchased large quantities of German surplus, including stockpiles of WWI Stahlhelms. The helmets were repainted, fitted with new liners, stamped with the Afghan coat of arms, and became standard issue for the Royal Afghan Army.

They remained in service through the 1950s and into the 1960s before being retired from regular Army use and placed into storage.

By the time U.S. forces entered Afghanistan after 2001, some of the old helmets had made their way into local bazaars. American soldiers spotted them and began bringing them home as souvenirs.

Why Do Special Forces Wear Crye
-
🚨Full Crye Precision video is live SOON on our channel!!!!🚨

Crye Precision’s story started in 2000, when two Cooper Union graduates received a contract to help redesign the Army’s “Soldier of the Future.” That work produced body armor and uniform concepts along with a camouflage pattern called Scorpion.

In 2004, the Army passed on Scorpion and selected UCP instead. Delta Force adopted Crye’s version, MultiCam, and the Rangers followed. By 2010, the Army was issuing MultiCam in Afghanistan, and by 2015 its new OCP pattern traced back to Scorpion.

Crye continued developing equipment beyond camouflage, including work on the Ranger helmet, while its plate carriers, camouflage, and privately purchased operator gear remained an important part of the company’s presence in special operations.
