More digestible. Still horrible. 💴 🤮 🗽

The budget proposed by is rooted in ignorance and weakness. This administration doesn’t understand what is. a key architect of this housing vision thinks it’s anything receiving public subsidies. That’s wrong.

In America Section 9 public housing must be managed day to day by a housing authority. If there isn’t a contract with an authority like AND the funding stream isn’t section 9 it’s not public.

When asked why they are investing in privatization and demolition they try to blame political will, rooted in racists rhetoric created by Ronald Reagan. I teach a workshop on how that rhetoric has led to the collapse of public housing. So I pushed back. I asked why this administration, and the staffers I was speaking to (Cea and a lead from HPD) are adopting the opinions of Reagan?
Why were they failing to see past the harmful rhetoric?
Why were they accepting the lack of will?
Why wasn’t this administration trying to debunk the myths surrounding the welfare queen and black and Latinos?
Why doesn’t Zohran want to leave a legacy of equity by rebuilding the largest stock of public housing?

Ultimately, if you are making policy and budgets that reflect racist rhetoric YOU ARE RACIST. I said this to them. They didn’t deny it. They didn’t tell me that they have black friends. They didn’t tell me that they have friends in they didn’t distance themselves from any of it.

I was hurt, and enraged. Still am. Sometimes validation doesn’t free us. Sometimes confirmation is painful. But I must turn the shock and pain into action.

So we have to keep making calls opposing this budget. Say: “I oppose the mayors budget proposal for public housing. We must invest all monies in comprehensive modernization of Section 9.”

It is estimated that 3 million people will be pushed out of HUD-assisted housing by this proposal. In New York the two-year time limit proposal would put 343,600 people in New York (including 148,100 children and 246,500 people in working families) – at risk of losing their assistance and facing eviction, and in worst cases, homelessness.

However, because of chronic underfunding, only one in four households that qualify receive any form of rental assistance. Most people in HUD-assisted housing who can work do work. Eighty-one percent of non-disabled people without young children worked in the past year, and those who do not work attend school, are caregivers, or

are ill.
