I was a 17 yr old country girl, naive as hell, working at a very fancy restaurant downtown. To say it was a whole different world would be an understatement. It was my first real exposure to the Gay community. Waiters, waitressesā¦ everyone had a sexual preference that was completely new to me.
My chef was a gay man who performed drag, Whitney Houston impersonations at a local club. After any crazy busy shift, he would bring a bowl of fettuccine Alfredo or wilted spinach salad and say āEat baby girl, you earned it tonightā. They made sure I never walked through that dark parking lot alone, my boyfriend was treating me rightā¦they protected me like I was their little sister. Iām so grateful my experiences were filled with the most loving, caring people that shaped my respect for the LGBTQ+ community.
When my daughter wanted to take me to my first Rocky Horror Picture Show, I didnāt hesitate. I wanted her too to experience life outside of what she knew. Of course it was wonderful, I never had any doubt.
Thank you Tim Curry for bringing generations together to experience Pop cultures finest moments, for shedding a shining light on those who may be different than us. You will never know the influence you had on so many.
