DUD'S DOODLES  ("On the Road Again", thanks Willie) - KICKS ON ROUTE 66 Part 2 in the series Part 2 of 2:

Hwy 666 (AKA: The Devil's Highway),which we took up to Santa Fe a long time ago, has had a name change due to the many accidents that took place on it. We stayed on 66 to Albuquerque, but saw so many scary drivers on it, we headed straight to Santa Fe. Bryan Cfranston isn't there anymore anyway.

Although Santa Fe is an extremely hard town to drive in, it is well worth the stop. "The Plaza" square has beautiful old churches, great dining spots, with spicy New Mexican foods, and cool gift shops. We even found a record store there called Lost Padre Records. They have an excellent selection of Classic Rock. I was immediately attracted to the store by the ICE OUT sign in the window. The store is owned by George Casey, who went to school down here in the Southland. Great titles and great prices !

The Loretto Chapel is a must see. It's been featured in many films and on even more tv shows. Built in 1873-1878, the spiral staircase is the central focus of a beautiful chapel adorned with stained glass windows and ancient pews. It is truly one of the most serene places I have ever been in my life, and I'm agnostic.Loretto is now non denominational.
The Loretto Chapel staircase in Santa Fe is a famous "miraculous" spiral staircase built in 1878 by a mysterious carpenter after sisters prayed a 9-day novena to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters, not Karen & Richard. The staircase is renowned for having no central support, being constructed entirely of wooden pegs, having 33 steps, and utilizing an unidentified, non-native wood.

Sitting in a pew under the staircase I saw a young guy that not only looked like one of my customers, but he was also a dead-ringer for a young Jimmy Page. He was from Texas and now going to school in New York. Ian was with his very nice family including Mom ,Dad and sister. In the Route 66 blog # 3, we will cover Georgia O'Keefe's Ghost Ranch, the Petrified Forest, and Painted Desert. Peace, Bill Dudley

DUD'S DOODLES  ("On the Road Again", thanks Willie) - KICKS ON ROUTE 66 Part 2 in the series and Part 1 of 2 blog:

HEADING EAST FROM WILLIAMS AZ.: As I've stated before, Arizona and Illinois are the states that maintain Route 66 the best. As you head East from Williams, you hit Flagstaff, which has become a very hip town, as it is the home of NAU (Northern Arizona University). No-one appears to be over 30 there, kind of like being in my store. However, the vibrant young downtown area is surrounded by many icons of the past including the Western Hills Motel with a working neon sign of horses galloping ahead of a covered wagon, many old haunted hotels covered in my last blog, and a train zooming by about every 2 minutes.  One train that I saw was towing at least 50 Army tanks. That was quite disturbing as most of the country wants no more war, especially in Flagstaff. Route 66 still flourishes in Gallup, New Mexico, and we stayed at the historic El Rancho Hotel built in 1936 by R. E. Griffith, the brother of one of Hollywood's Godfathers, D.W, Griffith. This "National Historic Landmark" served as a western base for cinematic legends. Stars like John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, and Katharine Hepburn stayed here, and the lobby walls are lined with vintage movie pictures of them all. Each room was named after the stars of yesterday like Lee Marvin, Jimmy Stewart and Rosalind Russell. We stayed in the Jack Carson room. I'd have preferred the Marx Brothers suite, or the Robert Mitchum or Bogart. This place is a time capsule dating back to 1930's and 1940's Hollywood. The names of the suites were missing from above the door of a few rooms, and one of them was Marilyn Monroe. I'll bet someone stole it. Anyway, the El Rancho is still a first-class hotel, some 90 years in. Not so fortunate for 3 very cute 1950's motels across the street. The Lariat Lodge, Blue Spruce and the next one due East are all being bulldozed for God knows what that 66 doesn't need. The Blue Spruce has a beautiful neon sign on it, and looks immaculate. Some developer is provably putting up an Amazon store on all 3 properties.
