Saline, silicone, or gummy bear? Three implant types, and the difference is more than just the fill.
Saline implants have a silicone shell filled with sterile salt water, usually during surgery. That allows a smaller incision, and if one ever leaks, the change is easy to see and the body safely absorbs the saline. They tend to feel firmer. Approved for breast augmentation from age 18.
Silicone gel implants come pre-filled with soft gel and offer the feel most people find closest to natural tissue. A leak can be “silent,” so the FDA recommends an ultrasound or MRI starting 5 to 6 years after surgery, then every 2 to 3 years. Approved for augmentation from age 22.
Gummy bear (form-stable) implants use a thicker, highly cohesive gel that keeps its shape, usually in a natural teardrop form. They typically need a slightly longer incision, and because they’re shaped, a rotation is more noticeable.
One thing all three share: implants are not lifetime devices, so plan on regular checkups. The right choice depends on your body, your goals, and your surgeon’s assessment.
